MODIFICATION NOTES

23.3.11 Raise vehicle until wheels are clear of the ground using lifting platform, added Step 1  
Information on depth of tire tread measurement on main tread added Step 5
INSPECT Checking     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
1 Hoist vehicle with lifting platform until wheels are free   AR00.60-P-1000SX
2 Check manufacture date of tires Model 221 with CODE (Z07) Highest protection
IMPORTANT For safety reasons it is strongly recommended to replace the tires if the manufacture date is older than 5 years.
 
3 Check tires on all wheel-and-tire assemblies IMPORTANT Check tread as well as outer and inner sidewalls on all tires for signs of damage such as cuts, punctures, cracks, breakouts, separation and ingressed foreign matter. If damage is present ↓
Replace tire:
Model 216, model 221 without Top protection with PAX system emergency wheel

4 Check tire wear pattern on all wheel-and-tire assemblies IMPORTANT Greater wear at the shoulder compared to the center of the tire is normal for the front wheel-and-tire assemblies. On the tires of the rear wheel-and-tire assemblies the wear at the center of the tread depth is mostly somewhat more pronounced than at the tire shoulders. In the case of an unusual wear pattern, determine and eliminate the cause for the increased tire wear, then:

MEASURING Measure     
5 Measure depth of tread of all tires and note measured values on the maintenance sheet IMPORTANT The main tread along the entire circumference must have a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm. Measure depth of tread at point of greatest wear. Perform measurement at outside, inside and center of main tread.
IMPORTANT The wide tread grooves in the center area of the tread, which accounts for roughly 3/4 of the tread width is deemed to be the main tread.
IMPORTANT For safety reasons tires should be replaced before reaching the minimum tread depth:
  • Conventional summer tires at approx. 2 to 3 mm tread depth,
  • PAX system summer tires at 3 mm tread depth
  • Winter tires at approx. 4 mm tread depth.

6 Interchange wheel-and-tire assemblies on front and rear axles If necessary, and only on vehicles without mixed tires
NOTES Maintain running direction of wheel-and-tire assemblies. Otherwise handling characteristics and handling comfort may be impaired and tire wear increased.
IMPORTANT Depending on the state of wear after a distance between 5000 and 10, 000 km.
