Function requirements

Overall description of RFK system

The RFK system assists the driver when parking and when backing up. With the aid of the backup camera the entire area surrounding the rear is transmitted.

The RFK system enables the driver to select between two parking modes:

IMPORTANT External environmental influence such as darkness, dust, fog or precipitation can restrict the functionality of the backup camera.

The backup camera control unit is the central controller unit in the RFK system. It transmits the real video pictures of the backup camera to the COMAND display via the COMAND controller unit. The backup camera control unit superimposes extension lines over these real video images, which provide a driver with more detailed information on events in the area at the rear of the vehicle. The COMAND controller unit generates the associated optical warning messages in parallel parking mode.

Activation

The parking mode last selected is activated by engaging reverse gear. The front central operating unit enables the driver to change between the Back-In Parking mode and the Parallel Parking mode.

Abort

Parking assist is terminated if:

IMPORTANT If canceled the backup camera control unit only provides camera images (extension lines are no longer generated).

Deactivation

The parking assist is deactivated immediately:

Warning messages

The warning messages shown in the COMAND display are generated by the COMAND controller unit. The warning messages disappear automatically after 3 s.

All the warning messages can be switched off by pressing the turn/push control (A40/9s11) in the front central operating unit.

If the driver selects a too large steering angle the message "Please turn back the steering wheel" is shown in the COMAND display.

Fault messages

In the event of a signal missing from the backup camera or other defective signals no display ensues in the COMAND display. The error message is filed in the memory of the backup camera control unit.

National version JAPAN ONLY

In this national version a voice output can also be selected for the Parallel Parking Mode. The voice output takes place in the Japanese or English and is activated or deactivated in the instrument cluster. As an alternative the warning messages in the COMAND display can likewise be reproduced in Japanese or English.
