In order to be able to operate a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone that is authorized on the audio equipment in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. Additional information is available at:

General
A distinction is made between the following 2 versions for the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Comfort telephony (with code (386) Comfort telephony)
Both versions use Bluetooth technology for data transfer.
The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example. The special comfort telephony features are summarized at the end of this document.
The mobile phone system includes the following processes:
- Bluetooth
- Switching on and off characteristics
- Establishing call and terminating call
- Accepting calls, rejecting calls and toggling
- Short Message Service (SMS) (without code (498) Japan version)
- Speed dial list
- Telephone book
- Address book (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer))

Bluetooth
The audio equipment supports the standardized Bluetooth network technology for simple and quick integration of mobile phones. Bluetooth is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth devices (e.g. mobile phones) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth, next to the wide availability of Bluetooth devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth devices to a Bluetooth network (ad-hoc network). The extremely high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of such a Bluetooth network is what makes the use of Bluetooth in the vehicle interesting.
The audio unit can integrate the latest-generation mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna.
If several Bluetooth-compatible mobile phones are located in the vehicle, then the connection is established with the last mobile phone used in the vehicle.
If the mobile phone last used in the vehicle is not present in the vehicle, a search is made for the mobile phone used before that. If a mobile phone has not yet been logged into the audio unit using Bluetooth or if the connection is to be made with another mobile phone, then the "Bluetooth telephones" or "Connect telephone" submenu item (depending on the national version) must be activated via the basic telephone function in the application bar and the Telephone menu item.
A list of mobile phones already recognized is displayed. This is where you can select and authorize the desired mobile phone. The "Update" entry is used to search for new mobile phones. After the update, it is possible to search and authorize the mobile phone to be connected from the displayed list.
Using the list of Bluetooth® telephones, connections to trusted Bluetooth telephones can be canceled or Bluetooth® telephones deauthorized.
Switching on and off characteristics
A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® can be switched on and off only with the buttons on the mobile phone itself. A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth processes the switch-on signal internally in the mobile phone. The lock code inquiry is only shown on the display of the mobile phone, if configured on the mobile phone and if the mobile phone transmits this status. The lock-code can only be entered using the mobile phone buttons. The reception status is received by the mobile phone's antenna.
The display of the lock-code and the reception status as well as the signals of the mobile phone buttons are processed internally in the mobile phone.
The switch-off signal via the mobile phone button is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone.
Function requirements for establishing and terminating a call

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).
Establishing call and terminating call
The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate or terminate a telephone call to another person in the mobile phone system network or the fixed-line network.
A telephone call can be established or terminated using the:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (establish telephone call only)
Establishing and terminating a telephone call involve the following processes:
- Establish and terminate telephone call via the buttons on the mobile phone
- Establish and terminate telephone call via the Audio/ COMAND control panel, telephone buttons or keypad on the audio unit
- Establish and terminate telephone call via the multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Establish call through the voice control system (VCS) (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
- Establish call through the navigation mode (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
- Establish telephone call in handsfree mode
- Terminating a telephone call
Establish and terminate telephone call via the buttons on the mobile phone
On a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth, the control signals of the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and not forwarded to the audio unit. The telephone call is completed in "Private mode" when the mobile phone supports "Private mode" "Private mode" is activated.
In "Private Mode" the user makes a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to take part in the conversation, i.e. voice input takes place via the microphone integrated in the mobile phone, and voice output takes place via the speaker integrated in the mobile phone.
Pressing the "END" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call (also in hands-free mode). The mobile phone interrupts transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals or data. This process runs internally in the mobile phone.
Establish and terminate telephone call via the Audio/COMAND control panel, telephone buttons or keypad on the audio unit
The basic telephone function is called up using the Audio/ COMAND control panel via the Telephone menu item in the application bar or using the "TEL" button on the audio unit. The basic telephone function is shown on the Audio/COMAND display. The following ways of dialing a telephone number are now available to the user:
- Enter the telephone number using the audio unit's keypad directly or using the Audio/COMAND control panel via the character bar on the Audio/COMAND display
- Search for telephone number using the "Address book" menu entry in the phone book or address book (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
- Search for the telephone number using the "Call lists" menu entry in the call lists (accepted, dialed)
The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down. After dialing the telephone number via the telephone buttons on the audio unit and pressing the "Accept phone call" button or by selecting the telephone function via the keypad on the audio unit and then activating the "TRANSMIT" function, the telephone call is established in hands-free mode (see function sequence "Establish telephone call in hands-free mode"). The telephone call is terminated by pressing the "END" button on the audio unit or by activating the "END" function in the basic telephone function. The control signals of the telephone keys or the keypad on the audio unit are processed internally. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the audio unit via the telematics CAN. This is displayed on the audio/COMAND display via a LVDS line.
Establish and terminate telephone call via the multifunction steering wheel button groups
The address book of the COMAND control unit (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer) is selected by actuating the button system selection (S110s3) via the selection menu in the instrument cluster.
Scrolling forward and back in the address book of the COMAND controller unit using the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) enables the name of the party being called to be selected. The telephone call is established in hands-free mode with the accept and terminate phone call button (S111s3) (see function sequence "Establish telephone call in hands-free mode"). The telephone call can then be terminated again using the accept and terminate phone call button.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded over the following components to the COMAND controller unit:
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module control unit
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
The display in the instrument cluster is generated by the COMAND controller unit over the interior CAN.
Establish call through the voice control system (VCS) (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
Pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the voice control system.
The control signals of the VCS [SBS] on button are forwarded over the following components to the COMAND controller unit:
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
A signal sound is emitted after the voice control system has been activated. On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the signals from the signal sound are transmitted from the COMAND control unit via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit and from there they are output via the speaker system.
On vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the COMAND control unit transmits the signal to the speaker system via direct lines.
Once the VCS has been activated, a telephone number can be searched for and dialed using different voice commands. The voice commands are sensed by the hands-free system microphone and relayed to the COMAND control unit via a direct line.
The telephone call is established in handsfree mode using the voice control of the VCS [SBS] (see function sequence "Establishing a telephone call in handsfree mode").
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Establish call through the navigation mode (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
If a telephone number is stored when entering a point of interest (POI), the user can select it using the keypad on the COMAND controller unit or via the voice control of the VCS [SBS]. The telephone call is established in handsfree mode (see function sequence "Establishing a telephone call in handsfree mode"). The control signals from the keypad at the COMAND controller unit are processed internally. The signals of the VCS [SBS] are transferred to the COMAND controller unit via the same route as for the function sequence "Establish telephone call via VCS [SBS]".
Establish telephone call in hands-free mode
After the telephone call has been established, the audio unit transmits the mobile phone signals or data to the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
The mobile phone signals and data are received by the mobile phone via the reverse route.
The voice input in hands-free mode is registered by the hands-free system microphone group and forwarded via a direct line to the audio unit. The audio unit sends the signals over direct lines to the speaker system or, for vehicles with code (810) Sound system, over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.
Terminating a telephone call
After terminating a telephone conversation, the COMAND controller unit discontinues transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals and data in a control unit-internal procedure, except when a telephone call is terminated using the buttons on the mobile phone. When a telephone call is terminated using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of mobile phone signals or data. This process runs internally in the mobile phone.
Function requirements for accepting a call, rejecting a call and toggling

Accepting calls, rejecting calls and toggling
The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate, terminate or toggle a telephone call to another person in the cellular telephone system network or in the fixed-line network.
It is possible to accept, reject or toggle a call using the following components:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The subfunction consists of the following processes:
- Call signal
- Call acceptance or rejection via the buttons on the mobile phone
- Call acceptance and rejection through the Audio/ COMAND control panel, telephone buttons or keypad on the audio unit
- Call acceptance and rejection via the multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Control for call waiting, toggling
Call signal
The mobile phone receives the call signal via the mobile phone antenna. The call signal is then forwarded to the "audio unit" in the following way:
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
The call recognition is displayed by the audio equipment on audio/ COMAND display via LVDS line.
The audio unit sends the ringing sound over direct lines to the speaker system or, for vehicles with code (810) Sound system, over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.
If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ringing is emitted over the vehicle speakers, otherwise the audio unit's default ringing sound is used.
When "Tel" has been selected on the instrument cluster, the call recognition is indicated on the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the signals from the audio equipment via the interior CAN.
Call acceptance or rejection via the buttons on the mobile phone
Pressing the "Accept call" button on the mobile phone serves to accept the call in hands-free mode. Pressing the "End" button on the mobile phone rejects the call. The mobile phone button control signals are processed internally and forwarded as follows to the audio unit:
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
Call acceptance and rejection through the Audio/COMAND control panel, telephone buttons or keypad on the audio unit
By pressing the "Accept phone call" button, the call is accepted in hands-free mode, or by selecting the "Accept" function in the "Telephone (Tel)" base function (with the Audio/COMAND control panel or via the keypad at the audio equipment).
When the "End" button is pressed once or the "Accept" function is selected in the "Telephone (TEL)" base function, the call is held. The call is rejected by pressing the "End" button twice on the audio equipment or by activating the "Reject" button function the "Telephone (Tel)" base function. The control signals of the telephone keys or the keypad on the audio unit are processed internally. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the audio unit via the telematics CAN.
Call acceptance and rejection via the multifunction steering wheel button groups
The call is accepted or rejected in hands-free mode by pressing the accept/terminate phone call button in the corresponding subfield. The control signal from the accept/terminate phone call button is forwarded to the audio equipment via the following route
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
Control for call waiting, toggling
If another call signal is received during a telephone call, this is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the audio unit over an LVDS line. The telephone call can now be accepted or rejected. If the incoming phone call is accepted, then it is active in hands-free mode and the call already underway is put into hold with "Full Function Portables" (toggle) and ended with "Reduced Function Portables".
If the incoming call is rejected, the existing call remains active in hands-free mode.
It is possible to accept, reject or switch a call with the following components as described in the previous sections:
- Buttons on mobile phone (no toggle)
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
Short Message Service (SMS) (without code (498) Japan version)
The SMS application enables the user to manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the "audio unit". The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receiving SMS
- Read SMS messages via the display of the mobile phone and via the Audio/COMAND display
- Delete SMS
- Read SMS (English or German)
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The SMS function with basic telephony assumes that the mobile phone supports the Message Access Profile (MAP).
The SMS function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Upload given SMS to audio unit
- Receive SMS message
- Call up the SMS application
- Display SMS message
- Reading out SMS message
Upload given SMS to audio unit
The SMS already stored in the mobile phone are transmitted from the mobile phone to the "audio control unit" in the following way:
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.
Receive SMS message
The SMS messages received by the mobile phone are sent as follows to the audio unit:
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
Call up the SMS application
The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the "Tel" basic function.
The "TEL" base function is called up by pressing the "TEL" function key on the audio unit. The corresponding basic mask appears. The "TEL" base function can also be called up via the "TEL" menu in the application bar.
The submenu "SMS" can then be called up on the function bar. The "TEL" function key control signals are processed internally by the audio unit.
The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent over the telematics CAN to the audio unit.
The Audio-/COMAND display is actuated by the audio unit over a low voltage differential signaling line.
Display SMS message
The SMS contents are displayed on the audio/COMAND display. The audio equipment actuates the Audio/COMAND display over the low voltage differential signaling line.
Reading out SMS message
SMS voice output is conducted over the vehicle speaker system.

Speed dial list
Up to 10 telephone numbers can be associated with the numbers 0 through 9 in telephone book entries. The call list and speed dial list menu entries enable the user to manage the entries. The speed dial list is active only when the telephone menu is active. Pressing the number on the audio equipment keypad for a longer period of time (approx. 2 s), completes a call to the telephone number stored.
Telephone book
The phone book contains the phone book entries stored in the audio unit. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book.
The system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately. The phone book is selected using the "TEL" function key on the audio unit via the basic telephone function, or with the Audio/ COMAND control panel via the Telephone menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display, and then through the "Name" menu item in the application field.
Read access to the telephone book of the mobile phone is possible if the mobile phone supports the Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP) Bluetooth profile. Otherwise, data from the phone book of the mobile phone can only be loaded onto the audio unit via "vCards".
Address book (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer))
The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit.
Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Data can also be transferred from other external devices (e.g. PDAs, laptops, etc.) to the address book via the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna. "vCards" can also be transferred into the address book from an SD card via the Secure Digital (SD) card slot at the COMAND controller unit. These data are then permanently available as address entries.
Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. Address entries can contain the following:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (phonetic entry of the name in "Katakana" syllabary) (with code (498) Japan version)
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (a number of telephone numbers can be saved with different symbols under one address entry)
- Geo position
The call can be established via the voice control system for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
The address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit are shown in the address book. Read access is available to the phone book of the mobile phone when the mobile phone supports the PBAP profile.
"Private mode"
When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. When dialing using the buttons on the mobile phone, the telephone call is carried out in "Private Mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode" and "Private Mode" has been activated.
After a telephone call has been accepted or established in hands-free mode, you can switch to "Private Mode" by activating "Private Mode" via the mobile phone if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode".
"Seamless Switch"
"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:
An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the audio unit is switched on and "Private mode" is not activated on the mobile phone.
An existing telephone conversation can be continued on the mobile phone if the audio unit is switched off.
With some mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.

- Telephone number of the Service Center entered as a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the audio unit or in the telephone book of the mobile phone

The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio unit" or the telephone book of the mobile phone. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system (via Bluetooth) and supports the service acceptance process at the Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.
Function sequence for establishing telephone call, data transfer and terminating call with Service Center
The fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio unit" or in the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected via one of the following components:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Voice control via the VCS [SBS]
After an active call has been established to the Service Center, the user starts the data transfer. The data is transferred after the call has been established by actuating a number key on the keypad of the "audio unit".
For data transfer purposes, the audio unit checks the kilometer reading and the maintenance computer information of the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.
On vehicles with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer the navigation data are also transferred by the navigation module integrated in the audio unit.
The data is transmitted by the audio unit by means of Dual sound Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones to the service center in the same way as when the call has been established successfully. After the data has been transferred to the Service Center, the user can talk to an employee at the Service Center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.
Comfort telephony (with code (386) Comfort telephony)
With comfort telephony a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone is inserted into a suitable mobile phone cradle (accessories) in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest. The mobile phone is connected through the mobile phone cradle to the Bluetooth® module.
The Bluetooth module charges the mobile phone's rechargeable battery, connects the mobile phone over a direct line to the multifunction antenna (outside antenna on vehicle) and via Bluetooth to the audio unit.
Comfort telephony exhibits the following special features:
- Signal path
- Switch-on characteristics
- Personal Identification Number (PIN) query
- SIM Access Profile (SAP) module
- Phone book
Signal path
Telephone signals in comfort telephony are received through the following path (and sent in the other direction):
- Multifunction antenna
- Direct line
- Mobile phone antenna splitter and stationary heater radio remote control (with code (386) Comfort telephony and code (228) Stationary heater) and direct line
- Antenna amplifier/mobile radio compensator (with code (386) Comfort telephony and code (228) Stationary heater) and direct line

Switch-on characteristics
With comfort telephony the mobile phone is switched on automatically by a wake-up pulse from the audio unit when the audio unit is switched on.

Personal Identification Number (PIN) query
If set on the mobile phone, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) is requested after the mobile phone has been switched on. The PIN prompt is shown by the audio unit through a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line on the Audio/COMAND display as well as over the interior CAN on the instrument cluster, and the PIN can be entered on the audio unit.
SIM Access Profile (SAP) module
Instead of a mobile phone a SAP module can also be plugged in to the Bluetooth module. The SAP module is connected to the audio unit (authorized) in the Telephony menu by way of the "Connect SAP module" entry in the function bar of the Audio/ COMAND display. Proceed as follows to do so:
Select SAP module from a list
Enter an optional password into the audio unit
Repeat password on SAP module
Enter PIN of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card into audio unit (the PIN can be stored depending on the telephone)
If a SIM card is not plugged in to the SAP module, the SAP module can use a SIM card for a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone in the vehicle if the mobile phone supports the SIM Access Profile.
As soon as a SAP module is connected to the audio unit, the "Connect SAP module" entry is replaced by "Disconnect SAP module".
The "SAP telephone" menu entry leads to a list of units, which matches the lists for Bluetooth telephony and Bluetooth audio. Special features of the SAP module unit list are the "Save PIN" and "Ring tones" functions under "Options". In "Ring tones" one of eight ring tones on the SAP module can be selected for telephony through the SAP module.
The SAP module communicates immediately with the audio unit through the Bluetooth antenna. The Bluetooth module is used by the SAP module for the power supply and connection to the multifunction antenna only.
The SAP module sends the telephone signals over the following path to the mobile telephone network:
- Bluetooth module
- Direct line
- Antenna amplifier/mobile radio compensator (with code (386) Comfort telephony and code (228) Stationary heater) and direct line
- Mobile phone antenna splitter and stationary heater radio remote control (with code (386) Comfort telephony and code (228) Stationary heater) and direct line
- Multifunction antenna
Phone book
The data from the phone book of the mobile phone can be loaded into the phone book of the audio unit (external data).
The data from the mobile phone's phone book are then permanently available, even if the mobile phone is no longer inserted in the cradle.
External phone book entries can only be removed by deleting all entries or deleting individual entries.
