Remove/install electronic ignition switch control unit - AR80.57-P-1000V

MODIFICATION NOTES

5.7.06 "Disconnect/connect battery ground line" removed
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove / install    
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.  
1 Completely move steering column downward or press completely downward    
2.1 Move selector lever to position "P" Vehicles with automatic transmission  
3.1 Read out version coding of EIS control unit (N73) When replacing EIS control unit: Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read in data for EIS control unit (N73) in STAR DIAGNOSIS.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Transmit stored data to new EIS control unit (N73).

4 Remove key from EIS control unit (N73)    
5 Remove cover below instrument panel   AR68.10-P-1500V
6 Unscrew trim ring (36a) from lower section of instrument panel with SPECIAL TOOL claw wrench (020). SPECIAL TOOL Claw-type wrench for ignition / starter switch trim ring Fig 2
7 Remove EIS control unit (N73) downward    
8.1 Unscrew ignition switch cable (36h) Vehicles with automatic transmission AR27.60-P-0122-01V
9 Disconnect electrical connectors    
10 Install in the reverse order    
11 Perform a function test IMPORTANT Vehicles with automatic transmission: It should only be possible to move the selector lever out of position "P" when the key is position "2" and the brake pedal pressed. It should only be possible to remove the key when the selector lever is in position "P".  
12 Read out fault memory with STAR DIAGNOSIS   *WE58.40-Z-1013-06A
