The telephone system can be operated as follows:

• directly at the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)
• Via the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the left multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1)
• With voice control system (VCS) via voice commands

The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call. The telephone mode is described in greater detail below. The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received via the telephone antenna (A2/22). The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) shows the destination field strengths in 5 grades when the telephone is in its ready status.

All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). The portable CTEL (A34/6) requires an interface to MOST for this, which is implemented by the UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) control unit (N123/1).

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following telephone functions:

• Direct dialing of the subscriber's number via the rotary switch or the numerical keypad, display of the name of the person called (in the event that the number entered is known).
• Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
• A 911 emergency call can be made without any PIN and with no telephone card inserted.
• Writing and sending of Short Message Service (SMS) messages
• Dialing from memory lists, sorted by:
  • memory location numbers
  • Names (alphabetic)
  • List of 10 last dialed numbers
• Speed dial, dialing of the first 10 memory locations using just one key or dialing of all other memory locations by entering the 3-digit memory location number.
• Display of telephone number for incoming call (if number is also transmitted via radio), display of name of calling party (if number is known).

Data safety, SMS buffer 

When the power supply fails, the characters stored in the buffer are saved. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost. When switched off in a controlled manner, no characters are lost. It is only possible to create and edit an SMS if SMS messages are present in the buffer. Characters are entered with the input aid (speller) or using the keypad (same as for portable CTEL).

These functions are also used for sending SMS messages; a receiver can be entered or selected from the telephone book.

Controlled and uncontrolled reactivation 

After switching back on, the basic telephone display appears. By selecting menu point "SMS" the main SMS menu can be displayed. In the SMS main menu, the user can select "Edit SMS" and continue editing using the input aid (speller).

The notebook for the telephone is always available.

Phone variants 

With the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), there is only one standard preinstallation available for the portable CTEL (A34/6).

The UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) control unit (N123/1) is from the same manufacturer as the portable CTEL (A34/6). It makes the physical connection between the cellular phone and the MOST bus and converts the protocol as described in the specification.
