The status of the steering wheel gear shifter MINUS (S110/1) and steering wheel gear shifter PLUS (S111/1) is read by the steering column module (N80) via Local Interconnect Network (LIN). The steering column module (N80) places the signal "Upshift" or "Downshift" on the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C).

The fully integrated transmission control (VGS) control unit (Y3/8n4) receives the request and initiates the gear change.

Gear changes which could result in impermissibly high or low engine speeds are not performed.
