Starting, function

There are two ways to activate (wake up) the system so that it can provide the hydraulic pressure required for driving when the vehicle is stationary:

Opening and closing the driver door (outside temperature ≥20°C)
Driver door opened (outside temperature ≤20°C)
Ignition: "ON"

After activation the automated manual transmission control unit (N15/6) actuates the hydraulic pump if the system pressure is too low.

The engine can only be started with the transmission in neutral. The neutral position (N) is shown in the gear display (A1p12) in the instrument cluster (A1).

If this display is flashing, the positions of the selector lever and the gearshift do not match. In this case the brake pedal must be depressed (again) and the selector lever moved (again) to the neutral position.

Parking, function

When the engine is stopped, the most recently engaged gear is selected; this is normally 1st gear or reverse. The clutch is closed.

This procedure provides extra security against the vehicle rolling away in addition to the applied parking brake. The parking brake should always be applied when parking, and the front wheels should be turned towards the curb on steep uphill and downhill gradients.

The vehicle can only be parked with 2nd gear or a higher gear engaged if the driver manually shifts up to the relevant gear after stopping the engine but with the ignition switched on.

If the vehicle is parked in shift lever position "N", the text message "Operate parking brake" appears via the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1). This is accompanied by an intermittent warning tone. These warning signals automatically stop when the ignition is switched off.

CAUTION: In this case it is possible to park the vehicle unsecured.
