Remove/install gas-operated strut to rear-end door - AR72.20-P-3600T

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being pinched or crushed  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, liftgates or sliding roof Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by body parts being pinched or crushed when working on gas-operated struts under tension Only remove and install gas-operated struts when they are not under tension and when the components are properly secured. AS00.00-Z-0012-01A
1 Open rear-end door, open load compartment cover and fold over rear backrests    
2 Remove headliner Only on vehicles with code (890) Automatic rear-end door AR68.30-P-4300TD
3 Remove expansion clip (2) from left and right hinge hole cover (3)    
4 Remove left and right hinge hole cover (3) between vehicle roof and rear spoiler toward outside. NOTES Carefully remove hinge hole cover (3). Otherwise the paint on the vehicle roof and rear spoiler can be damaged.  
5 Remove expansion clips (4) and detach side cover (5) from rear door frame until rear ball socket (6) is accessible IMPORTANTInstallation:  Ensure that rear door frame seal (7) is seated properly on side cover (5).  
6 Install support for rear-end door (9). SPECIAL TOOL *170589046300
7 Guide screwdriver (20) into groove below retainer (8) on rear ball socket (6) and raise retainer (8). Unclip gas-operated strut (1) from hinge (10) with suitable tool. NOTES Do not remove retainer (8) otherwise the tension will be lost
NOTESInstallation:  When pressing on rear ball socket (6), do not press on retainer (8) to prevent damage.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Pay attention to the correct seat of the retaining device (8). The retainer (8) should catch audibly and should not extend at the rear ball socket (6).
 
8 Open and close rear-end door ten times IMPORTANTInstallation:  It is necessary to open and close the rear-end door to check whether the retainer (8) is seated correctly.  
9 Unscrew bolts (11) and remove bracket (12) Only on vehicles with code (890) Automatic rear-end door  
    IMPORTANT Do not remove electric line (13) from bracket (12)  
10 Unscrew bolt (14) and remove left or right safety net holder (15) together with frame (16) Only on vehicles without code (890) Automatic rear-end door  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA68.50-P-1002-04A 
11 Unclip cover (17) with long wedge NOTES On vehicles with code (890) Automatic rear-end door: Carefully unclip cover (17). Otherwise roof paneling can be damaged.

12 Unclip front ball socket (18) from gas-operated strut (1) on ball stud (19) IMPORTANT On vehicles without code (890) Automatic rear-end door, the front ball socket (18) on the gas-operated strut (1) can be unclipped through the installation opening of the safety net holder (15) in the roof paneling.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Move gas-operated strut (1) on rear ball socket (6) by turning to installation position and unclip front ball socket (18) on ball stud (19).
 
13 Remove gas-operated strut (1) toward rear from roof frame    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by drilling gas-filled assemblies or components (noncombustible gases) Wear safety glasses and a face mask. AS00.00-Z-0006-01A
14 Dispose of removed gas-operated strut (1) properly When replacing gas-operated strut (1).  
REFER TO FORMS Degas and drain gas-operated strut   OS00.00-P-1001-01A
15 Install in the reverse order
