Operation of the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) on the multifunction steering wheel 

With the aid of the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110), the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) and the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1), the following systems that are controlled via the MOST ring can be operated and system information can be displayed:

• Audio systems:
• Navigation system
• Telephone
• TV, video

All the data is exchanged between the instrument cluster (A1) and the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) via the Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) and the CAN interior (CAN-B).

All button operations on the multifunction steering wheel are Voltage-coded steering column module (N80) read-in and placed on the CAN interior (CAN-B). The instrument cluster (A1) detects the coded messages and initiates, via the multifunction display (A1p13), the presentation of the system which is currently active or operated (audio, navigation, telephone) in the instrument cluster (A1).

In parallel with this, the audio gateway control module (N93/1) picks up the commands for controlling the functions within the MOST system, converts these into light pulses and with them actuates the necessary system components.

The instrument cluster (A1) receives the current time from the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), since it is automatically received vie GPS and therefore does not have to be adjusted.

COMAND-specific operating and display options on the multifunction display 

Radio 

Readout:

• Set frequency band and possible memory slot number
• Information whether station search is accomplished by frequency or via the stored station list

Operation:

• Volume
• Station search via station list or frequency, next station/previous station

CD changer (A2/6) or MD player (mini disc drive) 

Readout:

• Number of CD currently playing
• Number of CD track currently being played

Operation: 

• Volume
• Selection of track
• Next track/previous track

Navigation system 

Readout:

• Name of the road currently being traveled along
• Next street to turn off into
• Distance to next turning point (in units of length or as distance beam)
• Turn-off arrow

Operation:

• Volume of voice output

Telephone 

Readout:

• Request to enter PIN
• Name of the provider
• Vehicle outside transmit or receive range of telephone network
• Phone number (if stored) or caller's name

Operation:

• Volume
• Selection of name from stored phone directory, display of phone number and memory location number of party being called.
• Start making a call
• Accepting a call
• Dial repeat
• Reject or end call
