The gear selector switch DIRECT SELECT can be moved to 4 different positions. It is possible to select between 3 transmission modes using the transmission mode button (A40/9s8) (model 216) or the transmission mode switch (S16/5) (model 221).

The gear selector switch positions refer to:

P Park lock and start position

R Reverse gear

N Neutral and start position (No power transmission takes place. The vehicle is free to move)

D All 7 forward gears are available.

Transmission modes button (model 216) or transmission modes switch (model 221)

Sport program "S":

Driving in 1st gear for all driving situations
The gears are completely disengaged.

Comfort program "C":

Starting off always in 2nd gear (except in 1st gear shift range).
The gears are not completely disengaged.

If kickdown is actuated the gears are shifted up and down as for the sport program "S".

Manual program "M":

Direct gear selection by means of steering wheel gear shifter MINUS (S110/1) or steering wheel gear shifter PLUS (S111/1) possible (on model 216.377, model 221.077/177)
Direct gear selection possible by means of left steering wheel gear shifter (S110/2) or right steering wheel gear shifter (S111/2) (on model 216.371, on model 221 except model 221.077/177)

Shift range limitation (on model 216.371, model 221 except model 221.077/177)

When the sport program "S" or comfort program "C" is activated, in gear selector switch position "D" the shift range can be limited via the left steering wheel gear shifter and right steering wheel gear shifter.

Shift range limitation (on model 216.377, model 221.077/177)

In gear selector switch position "D", when the sport program "S" or comfort program "C" is activated, the shift range can be limited via the steering wheel gear shifter MINUS and steering wheel gear shifter PLUS.

In the limited shifting range an upshift is authorized close to the engine limit speed.
