Remove/install complete rear axle - AR35.10-P-0010SX

MODEL 221, 216

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
NOTES Information on preventing damage to electronic components due to electrostatic discharge   see AH54.00-P-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   see AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES While working on the rear axle (5) care must be taken to ensure that the surface of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected    
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.    
1 Shift gear into "N" position    
2 Switch off ignition IMPORTANT Do not remove ignition key, otherwise the transmission will be shifted into position "P".  
3 Raise vehicle with lifting platform until wheels are clear of the ground and secure   see AR00.60-P-0100SX
4 Discharge rear suspension struts (1) with STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with AIRmatic  
NOTES Notes on AIRmatic   see AH32.22-P-1000-02SX
5 Remove rear wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels   see AP40.10-P-4050SX
6 Install guard plates (01)   see AR42.00-P-0100-01A
SPECIAL TOOL Fig 2
7 Remove fender liner in right rear fender    
8.1 Remove left and right rear brake hose from brake line For bodywork or replacement of rear axle assembly. see AR42.10-P-0013SX
8.2 Remove left and right rear brake calipers For repair work on the tank or rear axle.
NOTES Attach brake caliper to vehicle without tension to relieve brake hose so that it is not damaged during repair.

9 Remove mechanical release cable (2) from filler fitting recess in right rear fender and expose   see AR42.20-P-0590-01SX
10 Remove exhaust system from flange connection back Engines 156, 272, 273, 275 see AR49.10-P-7100SX
Engines 642, 629 AR49.10-P-7100SXI
11 Separate electrical connectors on rear axle (5) and expose feed lines   see AR35.10-P-0010-02SX 
CLEAN Clean     
12 Clean electrical connector and its surrounding area at controller unit (A13)    
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
13 Remove electrical connector cover from controller unit (A13)    
14 Unlock electrical connector at controller unit (A13) separate and unclip feed line from rear axle carrier    
15.1 Remove link rod (22) from rear axle level sensor (B22/3) Vehicles with AIRmatic AR82.10-P-0005SX
15.2 Disconnect electrical connectors from left, right rear level sensor (B22/10, B22/7) Vehicles with code 487, Active Body Control (ABC) see AR82.10-P-0005SY
16 Detach propeller shaft (3) from differential (4)   see AR41.10-P-0050SX
17 Remove rear sections of underbody protection Vehicles with code (Z07) Top protection and fire extinguishing system AR61.40-P-1000SXS
18 Remove left and right rear extinguishing agent distributor Vehicles with code (Z07) Top protection and fire extinguishing system  
19 Support differential (4) with transmission jack and transmission plate and lash down securely COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS Transmission platform and transmission jack
 
 
20 Tension rear springs Vehicles with code (Z07) Top protection AR32.20-P-0200-06MB

21 Remove rear suspension struts (1) from spring control arms TORQUE SPECIFICATION see *BA32.25-P-1005-04L 
22 Remove bolts (5a) from left and right stop (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 without code (Z07) Top protection see *BA35.10-P-1008-01M 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 with CODE (Z07) Top protection see *BA35.10-P-1008-01O 
23 Unscrew bolts (5b, 5c) from left and right front and rear rubber mount TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 without code (Z07) Top protection see *BA35.10-P-1001-01M

24 Lower rear axle (5)    
25 Install in the reverse order    
26 Check oil level in rear axle differential (4) and correct if necessary   see AR35.31-P-0520-03SX
