Location 

The rack-and-pinion steering is bolted to the frame-type integral support on a mounting plate in front of the front axle (as viewed in the direction of travel).

Task 

The rack-and-pinion steering transmits the steering movement from the steering wheel to the wheels, assists the manual turning force and thus makes it easier to steer the vehicle. The steering wheel movement is transmitted to the gear rack with the drive pinion and then transmitted to the wheels via the tie rods.

The drive pinion has spiral splines. Since several teeth are always engaged at the same time, the rack-and-pinion steering is wear-resistant and generates very little noise. The variable steering gear ration is achieved by the effective diameters, which result from the form and angles of the teeth. The gear rack is an indirect design in the center range. The rack and pinion steering is increasingly more direct in the outer ranges. The difference between the gear ratio in the center range and the gear ratio in the outer range is approx. 30 %.
