MODIFICATION NOTES

13.10.04 Value for bolt (front axle carrier to longitudinal member) changed from 100 Nm to 80 Nm Figure modified for model 171 *BA33.10-P-1005-01A 
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
IMPORTANTInstallation  The suspension component bolts and nuts must not be tightened until the vehicle wheels are on the ground and it is in a ready to drive condition    
1.1 Deactivate easy entry/exit function for driver seat and steering wheel On vehicles with Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors), code 275.
NOTES Otherwise the driver seat and steering wheel move to a different position, e.g. when the driver door is opened or closed. In turn the upper frame may be damaged by the steering wheel retaining device SPECIAL TOOL .

2 Rotate steering wheel into center position and fix in position with retainer SPECIAL TOOL NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (8) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.
IMPORTANT Front wheels in straight-ahead position.

DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes caused by hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
4 Extract oil from expansion reservoir of power steering pump SPECIAL TOOL Fig 8
5.1 Remove air filter housing Engine 113 AR09.10-P-1150AC
6 SPECIAL TOOL Mount engine lifting device Engine 271, 113 AR33.10-P-0100-01V 
    Engine 272 AR33.10-P-0100-01VA

7 Raise engine until the engine mounts (7) are relieved of load    
8 Raise vehicle   AR00.60-P-1000V
9 Remove the front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050V
10 Detach lower engine compartment paneling IMPORTANTInstallation:  Only install the engine compartment paneling after a leak check on the rack-and-pinion steering (15). AR61.20-P-1105V
11 Remove underfloor paneling (4)   AR61.30-P-1001V
12 Remove the diagonal struts (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA62.30-P-1004-01A 
13 Undo bolt (11) of retaining plate (12) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1001-01F 
14 Remove retaining plate (12) of oil lines from the rack-and-pinion steering (15) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace sealing ring.  
15 Pull oil lines out of rack-and-pinion steering (15) and place to one side NOTES Before opening the hydraulic circuit of the rack-and-pinion steering (15) the area around the separation point should be cleaned thoroughly. Even minute particles of dirt, introduced into the hydraulic components, can result in malfunctions of the rack-and-pinion steering (15).
IMPORTANT Collect escaping hydraulic fluid in a container and seal connections with SPECIAL TOOL stop plugs.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Install new sealing rings.

16.1 Separate electrical connector from SPS [PML] solenoid valve (Y10) Only on vehicles with code (213) Speedsensitive power steering  
17.1 Remove cable tie and place electrical line to the SPS [PML] solenoid valve (Y10) to one side. Only on vehicles with code (213) Speed-sensitive power steering  
18 Pry tie rods (9) off steering knuckles   AR46.40-P-0200-01V

19.1 Undo bolts (17) of heat shield (16) and remove heat shield (16) Model 171.473  
20 Detach steering coupling (8) from upper steering shaft Refer to: ↓  
    Remove/install steering coupling. AR46.10-P-8000V
21 Detach left and right cross strut (13) from front axle carrier (1). IMPORTANT On model 171.473 remove right bolt of cross strut (13) when the front axle carrier is lowered (1).

23 Detach bracket for oil line (6) of rack-and-pinion steering (15) on front axle carrier (1)    
24 Undo bolts (10) on engine mount (7) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 271, 272 *BA22.10-P-1006-01O 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 113 *BA22.10-P-1001-01S 
25 Support and secure the front axle carrier (1) with COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission jack and COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission plate   AR33.10-P-0100-03V

26 Unscrew bolts (2) of front-axle carrier (1) NOTES The bolts (2) are self-tapping, for this reason to avoid any damage note the following:
  • Bolts (2) must not be removed using an impact wrench.
  • Never retap thread in longitudinal member.
  • Replace bolts (2).
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA33.10-P-1005-01A 
27 Pull the left and right front axle halves outwards while simultaneously lowering the front axle carrier (1). IMPORTANT Make sure that the front axle carrier (1) does not tilt when being lowered out of guide (5).
Transmission jack
 
28 Check front axle carrier (1) for damage IMPORTANT If necessary: ↓
Replace front axle carrier (1).
 
29.1 Detach rack-and-pinion steering (15) from front axle carrier (1) Only when replacing the front axle carrier (1)
Refer to: ↓
 
    Remove/install rack-and-pinion steering AR46.20-P-0600V
30 Install in the reverse order    
31 Fill power steering pump, bleed it and check for leaks   AR46.30-P-0010V
32 Perform a wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200V
