The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) allows portable CTELs (A34/6) from different manufacturers (e.g. Siemens, Motorola, Nokia) to be operated in the vehicle. The system installed in the vehicle is able to communicate with different cell phones (portable CTEL) (A34/6). It is only necessary to install the corresponding UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) required for the portable CTEL (A34/6) on the portable CTEL separation point (X39/37).

Telephone operation

The telephone system can be operated as follows:

Direct at radio (A2)
With the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the upper multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1)
Via portable cellular telephone (A34/6)

Information can be displayed via the

Display of the instrument cluster (A1)
Display of the radio (A2)

The volume can be adjusted separately for the telephone mode.

After a request is made via the radio (A2), the telephone radio signals are transmitted and received using the FM/AM amplifier (A2/18). The telephone signals are transmitted to the portable CTEL (A34/6) via the E-net compensator (A28/3). The task of the E-net compensator (A28/3) is to compensate for losses caused by the higher transmission frequency of the E-net by amplifying the signals. The telephone is illustrated by a symbol, if it is operational, on the display of the radio (A2). The reception field strength of the telephone after plugging it into the UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) is also displayed. All the control signals and useful signals (e.g., audio signals when hands-free system is activated) are transmitted via MOST (Media Oriented System Transport).

To communicate with the MOST subscribers, the portable CTEL (A34/6) requires an interface, the UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) control unit (N123/1).

The battery of the portable CTEL (A34/6) is charged via the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1). Charging is accomplished automatically as soon as the UPCI control unit (universal portable cellular telephone interface) (N123/1) is activated regardless whether the portable cellular telephone (A34/6) is switched on or off. The radio (A2) has the following telephone functions:

Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
Direct dialing of the telephone number via the numerical keypad, display of the name of the person called (if the number entered is stored)
Speed-dialing of the first 10 memory locations by pressing one key only or dialing all other memory locations by entering the 3-digit memory location number
Display of the telephone number when a call is received (if the telephone number is transmitted and if it is stored)
Display of the name (if the telephone number is stored in the telephone book)
Read text messages
Telephone book processing
Note book processing
Select from memory list using
- memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of last 10 numbers dialed

Hands-free mode

During a phone call, the user can hold the conversation using the hands-free system.

For this, the hands-free system microphone (B25) is located in the overhead control panel control unit (N70). From there, the microphone signals are directly forwarded to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) where they are digitized and transmitted to the radio (A2) via the MOST. The signals are processed again in the radio (A2) and sent to the vehicle speakers. The hands-free mode is activated by pressing a button on the control of the radio (A2). During a hands-free telephone call the audio source is automatically muted. It can be operated via the portable CTEL (A34/6), via the MFL or on the radio (A2).

Data safety, SMS memory

If the battery voltage drops below 9.5 V, the characters that are present in the memory of the radio (A2) are retained. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost. When switched off in the usual manner, no characters are lost.
