General  The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems integrated in the vehicle. The COMAND operating, display and controller unit includes the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents: Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) Switch on/off behavior; Volume/tone settings, function; Audio mode, function; Video mode, function; Telephone operation, function; Navigation mode, function; Voice control, function; Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) function, with code (537) Digital radio and code (833) Great Britain version; Satellite digital audio radio (satellite radio) (SDAR) function, with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio; Media interface function, with code (518) Media interface.

The displays and menus for the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are generated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The following applications are displayed on the instrument cluster as well as being displayed on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A1):  Audio - Video - Telephone - Navigation.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit communicates with the following control units over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST):  Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3), with code (537) Digital radio and code (833) Great Britain version - Control unit (SDAR) (N87/5), with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio - Sound system amplifier (N40/3), with code (810) Sound system - Media interface control unit (N125/1) and media interface connector 1 (X18/67), with code (518) Media interface.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN to the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) components and thus forms the communications interface (master).

Operating instruction  The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is operated using: The buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit; Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) The VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2) on the right of the steering column tube module (N80).
