The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is used to realize present and future on-board telematics services.

The currently supported on-board telematics services in the USA are:

IMPORTANT The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is not used for making normal telephone calls.

All the telematics services are integrated in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) and are fully automatic. Information is displayed on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and the upper multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1). Since the services require position finding, the navigation unit that is integrated in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is also used. The navigation unit is a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) that provides an exact position finding facility. The vehicle's position and direction of travel are determined and stored in a history. The navigation unit receives GPS information from the GPS antenna (A2/23) via the GPS antenna splitter (A2/5).

The communication unit is a cellular phone that has been adapted to the American cellular mobile telephone network that is only used to handle the telematics functions. The communication unit transmits and receives its information via the rod antenna (A28). The left antenna amplifier module (A2/64) splits up the signals from the rod antenna (A28) into the signals for the central locking (CL), the radio component of the audio unit that is installed and the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system. The portable CTEL antenna amplifier (A28/2) controls the telephone signals from the rod antenna (A28). During normal operation the telephone signals from the rod antenna (A28) are relayed to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) and vice-versa. During emergency operation the telephone signals from the rod antenna (A28) are relayed to the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) and vice versa. If the rod antenna (A28) fails, the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55) are used; a function that is realized via the emergency call system antenna splitter (A2/25).

However, a prerequisite for the use of the services is an emergency call system control unit (N123/4) communication module that has been authorized for the relevant service. In other words, the communication module of the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) must have been configured with the telephone number of the relevant service provider in the factory. In a second step, users must authorize themselves at the service center using this telephone number. Authorization sometimes takes place in the factory. The telematics services are activated by pressing the relevant button on the MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group (S93/6) or in the case of a manual emergency call by pressing the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) on the overhead control panel control unit (N70). After activation has taken place, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) transmits a Short Message Service (SMS) message to the service center. A voice connection to the service center is set up at the same time.

Function requirements 

Each telematics service must be authorized separately. If a fault is found or the service has not been authorized, an error message appears in the upper multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) and in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The system is ready for operation as soon as circuit 30 has been activated.

Self-test 

When circuit 15R has been activated, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) performs a self test (approx. t = 3.5 sec.). If the test is successful, the system is ready for operation.

Basic functions 

Emergency call system 

If a driver gets into an emergency situation in a remote location, a service employee can obtain an overview of the situation inside the vehicle using the data transmitted by the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) and initiate appropriate remedial measures (automatic emergency call). However, it is also possible to place a manual emergency call at any time by pressing the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70).The emergency call system can be activated in two different ways:

In both cases, an emergency call is automatically transmitted to the nearest emergency call center. The emergency call message contains the following information:

Terminating an emergency call 

The call is normally terminated by the emergency call center.

IMPORTANT The emergency call set-up is terminated after the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) has made 5 unsuccessful dialing attempts.
