If certain lamps fail, other substitute lamps are actuated (pulse width modulated).
The bulbs for the exterior lights are permanently monitored by the electronics of these control units for short circuit and open circuit, if the exterior lights are switched on:
- Driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)
- Rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2)
The scope of the substitute light operation is dependent on the country-specific version. Flashing functions have priority over continuous light.
If the backup turn signal indicator is active, flashing on and off is accomplished with normal bright/dark cycles of the stop lamp. If the brake is operated as well, the side of the stop lamp that is not flashing on and off is switched on as well as a stop lamp. If the taillamp is active additionally, the stop lamp of the side on which the lamp does not flash on and off, is reduced to the taillamp level.
