The radio (A2) is the central control panel for the entertainment and communications systems integrated in the vehicle within the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). One CD drive and one audio amplifier are integrated. The radio (A2) has an integrated screen to display information such as function key assignment, functions status, and operating menus.

The following functions can be operated via the man-machine interface (MMI):

• Radio, satellite digital audio radio (satellite radio) (SDAR), CD, and CDC for audio
• Telephone and SMS (read only) for communication
• Audio AUX

Additional audio sources, e.g. an MP3 player, can be integrated into the front entertainment system using the audio AUX function. An AUX jack is located in the glove compartment as a connection facility.

The radio (A2) can be operated by two main control fields, which are located on the left and right next to the display, a rotary pushbutton, a cross-shaped rocker button, and 4 buttons below the display. Some functions can be activated using the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL). Here one should note that all buttons actuations on the multifunction steering wheel are initially processed by the instrument cluster (A1). The instrument cluster (A1) links the incoming button operations with the current menu setting on the upper multifunction display (A1p13) and transmits a message to the radio (A2) via the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) if necessary. The digital components of the radio (A2) are networked to each other via the MOST.

This data bus system is used to transmit data (control commands and useful information) between the various system components. As the individual components work with different data formats and require different data exchange rates and security levels, different data bus systems have been installed:

• MOST
• CAN-B

The conditions must be met for startup:

• Circuit 15R ON
• No undervoltage or overvoltage
• System check carried out without faults

System activation 

If the rotary pushbutton is pressed, the radio (A2) is switched on. In each case the volume can be regulated with the pushbutton rotary switch for the audio source active.

The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user. The radio (A2) is operated via:

• Permanently programmed function keys
• Alphanumeric key block
• Eject button
• Programmable function keys
• Combination push and rotary knob with integrated hands-free button
• Cross-shaped rocker switch with pushbutton
• ON button
• Mute button
• ON button
• Mute button
• Display
• Control buttons on the MFL

A remote control is not planned.

The following components are actuated by the radio (A2):

• CD player with changer (in glove compartment) (A2/6); data exchange takes place via MOST.
• Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1); data exchange takes place via MOST.
• Instrument cluster (A1); data exchange takes place via CAN-B.
• SDAR control unit (N87/5) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio); data exchange takes place via MOST.
• An external analog audio source, which is connected to the radio (A2) via the connection in the glove compartment. Data exchange via a discrete line.

Read out errors with the aid of STAR DIAGNOSIS 

The radio (A2) has its own diagnostic trouble code memory. When the fault memory is called up by means of STAR DIAGNOSIS, the data are transmitted to the radio (A2) via the MOST and can then be read out. The central gateway control unit (N93) carries out the diagnosis via the CAN-B to the radio (A2).

Satellite digital audio radio (satellite radio) (SDAR) up to 31.5.05 

The SDAR control unit (N87/5) is planned as a dealer option in US vehicles, in other words the entire wiring is present in the vehicle. In order to equip the vehicle correspondingly, the SDAR control unit (N87/5) and the SDAR antenna (A2/82) have to be installed and connected; then the function can be called up on the radio (A2) using the man-machine interface (MMI).

SDAR as of 1.6.05 

The "Satellite radio" function (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio) is planned from this point in time on as factory-installed special equipment in the vehicle. Thus, not only the complete wiring is installed in the vehicle, but also the SDAR antenna (A2/82) and the SDAR control unit (N87/5).

It is possible to receive digital satellite stations. The prerequisite is that this has been enabled by a provider. If the system is enabled, between 100 and 224 additional stations can be received.

Since modification year 07/1 the SDAR control unit (N87/5) (3rd generation) has been used, which is now also available for vehicles with code (460) Additional parts, Canadian vehicles. The SDAR control unit (N87/5) (3rd generation) differs from previous generations through the following features:

• Shorter response times
• Improved reception properties
• Temperature and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) properties have been optimized
