The navigation of the navigation system (based on DVD data basis) is basically supported by voice outputs:

The voice data are originally stored on the navigation digital versatile disk (DVD) as individual word segments. This data record is automatically transmitted from the DVD into the navigation processor (N41/1) and stored there.

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is equipped with the following languages:

IMPORTANT Several driving recommendations in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.

The data for the voice output are transmitted by the DVD into the navigation processor (N41/1) where they are stored. The navigation processor (N41/1) links these word segments into complete instructions or information and produces the corresponding low frequency signals (LF) signals. The audio frequency signals generated in this way are internally forwarded to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) if required where they are amplified and output over the vehicle speakers. These can be selected using the "System settings" menu.

IMPORTANT If the vehicle is equipped with code (810) Sound system, the voice signals are transmitted digitally from the navigation processor (N41/1) to the sound amplifier (A2/13) via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). There they are amplified and then output via the vehicle speakers.

It takes a few seconds to load the voice signals, and this will change both the voice output and the menu text in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). Voice loading takes place again automatically after a power disconnection.

IMPORTANT While a language is being loaded by the DVD, severe vibrations (e.g. bad road conditions) should be avoided. Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. In such cases it is necessary to reload the language.

Superimposition of voice output and an audio source. 

When voice output is active simultaneously with an audio source (e.g. CD), the two signal sources are superimposed.

Volume of voice output 

The voice output volume can be adjusted during voice output. A definable difference (can be modified in "Settings" menu) is maintained between the volume of the current audio source and the voice output volume.

Example for voice output 

The volume is turned down during voice output. If the volume difference to the audio signal falls below the specified level, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) lowers the level of the audio signal until the specified volume difference has been reached again. After voice output has taken place, the volume of the audio signal is increased to match that of the voice output. The volume of the voice output cannot be reduced to below a certain minimum level.

Voice output mute circuit 

The navigation voice output can be muted during voice output by pressing the mute button (button marked with struck-out speaker). The mute feature applies only for the current voice output. When navigation voice output and another audio source (e.g. CD) are active simultaneously, the navigation voice output is switched to mute when the mute button is pressed for the 1st time and the complete playback is switched to mute when the mute button is pressed a 2nd time.
