Remove/install air spring - AR32.22-P-1500RT

MODEL 251 with CODE (488) Steel/air suspension with CODE (489) Airmatic (air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive damping system ADS)

REMOVING Removing     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by moving parts that can pinch, crush  or, in extreme cases, even sever  extremities No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating range of the mechanism when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

IMPORTANT Notes on AIRmatic   AH32.22-P-1000-02RT
1 Raise vehicle with vehicle lift IMPORTANT Raise vehicle far enough until the wheels are clear of the ground. AR00.60-P-1000RT
2 Empty air spring (3) with STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnosis system    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
3 Switch off ignition and remove the transmitter key from the EIS [EZS] control unit IMPORTANT On vehicles with Keyless Go, code 889:
Press Keyless Go start/stop button repeatedly until ignition is switched off. Remove transmitter key from vehicle and store it in a location beyond its transmission range (at least 2 m).
 
4 Raise vehicle with vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-1000RT
5 Unscrew threaded connection for compressed air line of air suspension (5) from the air spring (3) IMPORTANT Seal opening at the threaded connection for compressed air line of air suspension (5) and at the air spring (3).

6 Carefully pull the air spring (3) downwards at its top plastic frame (arrows B), until the air spring (3) detaches from the retaining clip (1) NOTES Do not twist air spring (3) otherwise it will be damaged
IMPORTANT The retaining clip (1) must be replaced during installation as it is destroyed during removal.
 
7 Carefully push the air spring (3) together upwards (arrow C), in the process press the air spring centering (4) from below out of the lower transverse control arm (6) NOTES Do not twist air spring (3) otherwise it will be damaged  
8 Remove air spring (3) downwards at an angle (arrow D)    
INSPECT Checking     
9 Check air spring (3) and cover (2) for damage IMPORTANT Replace if necessary.
IMPORTANT If necessary remove the remains of the retaining clip (1) from the upper bore of the air spring (3).
 
INSTALLING Install     
NOTES If the air spring (3) is not installed and filled in accordance with the regulations, it can be pre-damaged and fail later on    
10 Mount cover (2) on the air spring (3) IMPORTANT The fixing journals (7) must engage in the holes (arrows E) of the air spring (3). The curvature (arrow F) of the cover (2) must be positioned above threaded connection of the compressed air line of the air suspension (5).  
11 Install new retaining clip (1) on the body IMPORTANT Remove the remains of the old retaining clip (1) from the body  
12 Insert air spring (3) NOTES Do not twist air spring (3) otherwise it will be damaged
IMPORTANT The air spring (3) must latch in the retaining clip (1) and be positioned with the lug (arrow A) of the air spring centering (4) correctly in the lower transverse control arm (6).
 
13 Screw threaded connection for compressed air line of air suspension (5) onto the air spring (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.22-P-1009-03C

14 Lower vehicle with lifting platform IMPORTANT Only lower vehicle far enough that the wheels are still easily accessible. AR00.60-P-1000RT
15 Start engine and run IMPORTANT Before starting ensure that the transmission is in the park position
IMPORTANT Use exhaust extraction!
 
16 Fill the air spring (3) using the STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnosis system IMPORTANT Ensure leaktightness of air suspension system.  
17 Switch off engine and lower vehicle using the lifting platform
