Location
The saddle-shaped fuel tank with a filling capacity of about 95 liters is located on the frame floor in front of the rear axle.
Design
It is made of two-layered plastic and is subdivided into two chambers.
The lines and the filler neck are plugged onto the fuel tank via Quick connect connections. The connections must be pressed together and removed to detach the lines.
The filler neck is locked in place with a wire clip. When the filler neck is detached a check valve closes in the fuel tank.
The fuel feed module and the fuel filter are mounted with screw rings on the fuel tank. These can be reached over the interior if the bonded carcass cover is removed under the rear bench seat. Work with the lowest possible fuel level! Replace the screw ring with sealing ring after each disassembly! The fuel filter only needs to be replaced after 250, 000 km.
One filling valve and one rollover valve is located at the three highest positions in the fuel tank. The filling valves close the ventilation system if the maximum fuel level is reached when refueling. The fuel rises up in the filler neck quickly, the nozzle switches off and overfilling is prevented.
The rollover valves close the ventilation system in case of an accident to prevent fuel leaking out.
Each fuel tank chamber has a fuel level indicator sensor. Both resistance values are transmitted separately to the rear SAM control unit which sends corresponding signals over the CAN data bus to the instrument cluster.
Function
The fuel flows from the two-stage fuel pump into the fuel delivery module, out of the right fuel tank chamber, through the fuel pressure line to the fuel filter with fuel pressure regulator into the left fuel tank chamber.
A junction with the fuel pressure line supplies the suction jet pump. A suction effect is produced in the suction jet pump which draws fuel from the deepest point out of the left fuel tank chamber to the fuel delivery module.
Moreover excess fuel flows from the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel delivery module.
This ensures that the left fuel tank chamber is properly emptied.
The filtered fuel with controlled fuel pressure is supplied to the engine via the fuel pressure line (single-line system).
The housing of the fuel delivery module serves as a swirl pot. While cornering with a low level of fuel in the fuel tank, it prevents the fuel pump from drawing air.
A fuel strainer is installed at the bottom in the fuel delivery module at the feed to the fuel pump.
The fuel tank has no outlet valves. It is drained through the fuel pump via the fuel line in the engine compartment.
