Location

The saddle-shaped fuel tank with a fill quantity of around 95 liters is located at the frame floor of the rear axle.

Design

It consists of double-layer plastic and is divided into two chambers. The lines and filler necks are connected to the fuel tank via Quick-connect connections. To loosen the lines, the connections must be pinched and removed.

The filler neck is locked with a wire clamp. When the filler neck is removed, a check valve in the fuel tank closes.

The fuel delivery module and the fuel filter are fitted to the fuel tank using threaded rings. These can be accessed via the interior when the attached vehicle shell cover has been removed from below the rear bench seat. When working on the vehicle, make sure the fuel level is as low as possible! Replace threaded ring with sealing ring after each disassembly! The fuel filter must not be replaced until after 250.000 km.

A filling valve and a rollover valve are located at each of the three highest points in the fuel tank. The filling valves close off the ventilation system when the maximum fuel level is not reached when the tank is refueled. The fuel rises rapidly in the filler neck, the nozzle closes and overfill is prevented.

The rollover valves close off the ventilation system in the event of an accident to prevent fuel leaking from the tank.

Each fuel tank chamber has a fuel level indicator sensor. Both resistance values are transmitted separately to the rear SAM control unit, which processes the signals accordingly and transmits them to the instrument cluster over the CAN data bus.

Function

The fuel flows from the two-stage fuel pump into the fuel delivery module, out of the right fuel tank chamber, through the fuel pressure line to the fuel filter with fuel pressure regulator into the left fuel tank chamber.

A junction with the fuel pressure line supplies the suction jet pump. A suction effect is produced in the suction jet pump which draws the fuel from the deepest point out of the left fuel tank chamber to the fuel delivery module.

Moreover excess fuel flows from the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel delivery module.

This ensures that the left fuel tank chamber is properly emptied.

The filtered fuel with controlled fuel pressure is supplied to the engine via the fuel pressure line (single-line system).

The housing of the fuel delivery module serves as a swirl pot. While cornering with a low level of fuel in the fuel tank, it prevents the fuel pump from drawing air.

A fuel strainer is installed at the bottom in the fuel delivery module at the feed to the fuel pump.

IMPORTANT The fuel tank has no outlet valves. It is drained through the fuel pump via the fuel line in the engine compartment.
