Location 

The air pump is located upstream of the intake manifold.

Task 

The electrical air pump pumps the injected air to the exhaust side of the engine.

Design 

Electrically operated vane-type pump. The injected air is drawn from the air filter (clean air side) and driven via two pressure connections via the air shutoff valves to the outlet ducts.

Function 

The electric air pump is actuated when air injection is enabled via the air injection relay at the same time as the air pump switchover valve for a maximum of 40 seconds. Its power consumption at 13 V is approx. 45 A.

This draws the injected air from the air filter (clean air side) an and drives this via two pressure connections via the air shutoff valves to the outlet ducts. If the air pump runs for longer than around 4 minutes, for example due to an incorrect actuation, it will be damaged.

Following actuation, air injection remains locked. A new enable of the air injection will only take place if the catalytic convertors cool down again due to a sufficiently long stoppage of the engine. The electrical air pump thus has sufficient time to cool down again.

IMPORTANT

Air injection may be actuated deliberately using STAR DIAGNOSIS for a maximum of 2 minutes. Prior to the next actuation, it is essential to maintain a cooling time of 30 minutes, otherwise the air pump may be damaged.
