Inspect cylinders for leaks - AR01.00-P-1300GZ (ML500)

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/Install    
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns when working in engine during starting procedure Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.

1 Bring the engine up to operating temperature (approx. 80°C) IMPORTANT Check the cylinder for leaks only when the engine is at normal operating temperature.  
2 Remove key from the ignition lock IMPORTANT On vehicles with Keyless Go, code 889: Press keyless go start/stop button repeatedly until ignition is switched off  
3 Open engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000GZ
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing coolant. Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage bottles.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye protection.

4 Undo cap of coolant expansion reservoir    
5 Remove oil filler cap    
6 Remove a spark plug from each cylinder    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Replace spark plugs   AP15.10-P-1580GZ
7 Position the piston of the cylinder to be checked at the top dead center with the top dead center selector IMPORTANT Crank the engine at the center bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine.

8 Connect cylinder leak tester (04) IMPORTANT Calibrate cylinder leakage tester (04) and screw the connection hose into the spark plug bore

INSPECT Check     
9 Pressurize the cylinder with compressed air and read off the pressure loss on the cylinder leak tester (04) Cylinder leakage permissible total loss indication *BE01.00-P-1001-02Z 
    Cylinder leaktightness permissible losses at valves and cylinder head gasket *BE01.00-P-1002-02Z 
    Cylinder leakage permissible loss at pistons and piston rings
IMPORTANT If the crankshaft rotates:↓
*BE01.00-P-1003-02Z 
    Install retaining lock for crankshaft AR03.30-P-5000GZ
10 Check the other cylinders in the firing order of the engine Firing order AR01.00-P-1300-03HA 
11 Install in the reverse order
