With code (527) navigation module for COMAND or code (528) HIGH Class USA the external navigation module is designated navigation processor (N41/1).

The navigation of the navigation system (based on CD-data) is basically supported by voice outputs:

Name of the next road to turn into

For streets without names, the "compass direction" (north, south, east and west) is specified. No compass direction is stated in the case of streets (e.g. in towns) which are designated by a name.

The voice data is originally stored on the navigation DVD as individual word segments. This data record is automatically transmitted from the DVD into the navigation processor (N41/1) and stored there.

The navigation processor (N41/1) links these word segments into complete instructions or information and produces the corresponding low frequency signals.

If required the low frequency signals thus generated are passed on via MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) to the audio signal processing in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1), are amplified there and then output via the vehicle speakers.

Several driving recommendations in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.

Manual voice loading of navigation DVD

Under the "SERV/voice" menu the voice output data can be transmitted from the DVD into the navigation processor (A41/1) where it is then stored in a non-volatile way.

Loading a language requires several seconds and changes the voice output as well as the menu texts on the display. Voice loading takes place again automatically after a power disconnection.

While a language is being loaded by the DVD, severe vibrations (e.g. bad road conditions) should be avoided. Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. In such cases it is necessary to reload the language.

Control of the navigation system voice output

If a major emergency message is transmitted, the audio output consists only of this message as this has absolute priority and must not be interrupted by any other message.

If the volume is altered during a navigation system voice output, this is regarded as the absolute level for the next navigation system voice output.

For the volume setting, the following options exist:

Setting of a minimum differentiation between the audio source volume and the navigation voice output
Setting of a minimum differentiation between the navigation voice output and the audio source

Setting options:

If the volume of the audio source is lower than the navigation voice output to be listened to, the level of the audio source is not changed.
If the level of the audio source is the same or louder, it is set below the level of the navigation voice output to be heard at that moment during the voice output of the navigation system. As soon as the voice output is ended, the volume of the audio source is restored to the original setting prior to the voice output.
The audio source and navigation voice output can have the same volume or the navigation voice output can be removed completely.

The navigation voice output has the basis values - minimum and maximum noise level.

During the navigation voice output the volume cannot be adjusted below the minimum noise level or above the maximum noise level. After the end of the navigation voice output in this case the minimum noise level or maximum noise level remains adjusted for the next navigation voice outputs.

Voice output mute circuit

The navigation voice output can be muted by pressing the MUTE button for ≤ 2 seconds during a voice output.

The mute feature applies only for the current voice output. When the MUTE button is pressed for ≥ 2 seconds a window with the contents "driving instructions muted" appears in the NAVI screen. Activating voice output: By repeatedly pressing the MUTE button

If a traffic announcement is heard simultaneously with a navigation voice output, when the MUTE button is pressed for the first time, the traffic announcement is muted and when the MUTE button is pressed for the second time the navigation voice output is muted. The Mute state for a traffic announcement only applies to the current announcement.
