Dynamic cornering lamp

The dynamic cornering lamp ensures optimum corner illumination. A conventional bi-xenon headlamp serves as the basis which as previously makes available high beam and low beam.

The complete headlamp unit is supported in a retaining frame so that it can be swiveled. When the vehicle steers into a corner the headlamp unit also swivels into the corner up to a maximum of 15°.

The system functions both as a low beam and a high beam.

Dynamic cornering lamp actuation depends on the following set variables:

A dynamic cornering lamp is created by the headlamp unit swiveling horizontally.

The direct input parameter is the steering angle, for it describes the driver's direction requirement.

The vehicle speed influences the control response of the swiveling angle relative to the steering angle.

At a low vehicle speed a smaller ratio is needed so that for example in city traffic the light pattern does not appear too jerky.

At moderate speeds direct reactions follow relatively small steering wheel angle changes.

At higher speed the system responses have a larger ratio.

The damping and amplification is continuous and not threshold-specific so that a faster swiveling back in the curve exit is ensured. With right-hand traffic the left curves are assessed more sharply than right curves

In order to compensate for the natural weaving of the vehicle when driving straight ahead, an area is provided with lower sensitivity and greater damping (approx. ±6° steering angle).

Adjustment values

Effective dynamic swivel angle:

Swivel speed

The swivel speed is at least 15°/s.

Function prerequisites

When the vehicle is stationary the cornering lamp reaches its zero position again.

Actuation

The left dynamic cornering lamp motor and right dynamic cornering motor (E1m2, E2m2) are actuated by the headlamp range adjustment control unit (N71) via the HRA [LWR] power modules (E1n3, E2n3).

Faults occurring such as short circuits or discontinuities are reported back to the headlamp range adjustment control unit (N71).

Failure of dynamic cornering lamp, function

The driver-side SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) and front passenger-side SAM control module (N10/11) respond here to a signal which is transmitted from the headlamp range adjustment control module (N71) via the central gateway control module (N93) to the driver-side SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) and front passenger-side SAM control module (N10/11). The signals for correction are transmitted depending on vehicle speed. A distinction is made between a right hand steering vehicle and left hand steering vehicle.

Backup function in the case of a fault

Generally in the event of a malfunction of the cornering lamp control the left low beam or right low beam (E1e2, E2e2) is switched off and the left and right fog lamp (E5/1, E5/2) is switched on in order to avoid dazzling the oncoming traffic.

IMPORTANT In the event of a defect in the dynamic cornering lamp a fault message is shown in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1). The meanings of the various fault messages are listed in the vehicle operator's manual.

Diagnosis

It is only possible to diagnose the cornering lamp power module in conjunction with the headlamp range adjustment control unit (N71) via CAN class C and the serial bidirectional single-wire interface.
