23.9.08 Coat brake paste, added Step 13  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. AS42.46-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by handling hot or glowing objects. Wear safety gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A

1 Open brake fluid reservoir and extract some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the brake fluid reservoir from overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA42.50-P-1001-01D 
2 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select menu item "SBC Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system".
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
 
3 Remove rear wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050TX
4 Remove brake pad contact sensor (S10/4) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace defective brake pad contact sensor (S10/4).  
NOTES Notes on installing brake pad wear sensor contact sensors   AH42.10-P-0003-01A
5 Pry off clamp (31h)    
6 Remove guide pin (31c) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace guide bolts (31c).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA42.10-P-1003-12B 
7 Remove brake caliper (31) with inner brake pad (31g) NOTES Attach brake caliper (31) to vehicle free of tension. Do not kink or tension brake hose, as otherwise it will be damaged.  
8 Remove brake pads (31g) IMPORTANT Brake pads (31g) are to be disposed of as special waste. The local authorities can provide information regarding whether disposal is also permitted as industrial waste similar to domestic waste.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only the brake pads (31g) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be built-in as a set. Insert inner brake pad (31g) with riveted- on spring in brake piston, insert outer brake pad (31g) in brake caliper support (31n).
 
INSPECT Checking     
9 Check brake pad thickness and brake disks IMPORTANT Only replace brake pads (31g) and brake disks in complete sets if necessary.  
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Check brake lining thickness   AP42.10-P-4253A 
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Inspect condition of brake disks   AP42.10-P-4258TX 
10 Check brake caliper (31) for leaks and dust boot (31m) for damage and correct seat IMPORTANT In the event of a leaky brake caliper (31) or damaged or incorrectly seated dust boot (31m):

Replace brake caliper (31). AR42.10-P-0080TX 
11 Press back brake piston using resetting device (01) NOTES If brake pads (31g) have been removed from several brake calipers, secure their brake pistons beforehand with wedges to prevent them from falling out. If the brake piston is difficult to move:↓  
Replace brake caliper (31). AR42.10-P-0080TX

CLEAN Clean     
12 Clean contact surfaces of brake pads (31g) on brake caliper (31) and brake caliper support (31n) NOTES Do not use any sharp-edged or pointed tools to prevent damage.  
13 Coat brake paste NOTES Only use the brake paste listed in the linked description and only coat this on the specified points otherwise noise complaints or damage to the brake system may occur AR42.10-P-0161-01B
MB Plastilube brake paste (brownish) *BR00.45-Z-1084-06A 
14 Install in the reverse order    
15.1 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select the menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Initial startup after repair"/"Remove/install brake pads".
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
 
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
15.2 Operate the brake pedal several times until the brake pads (31g) contact the brake disks Vehicles with Adaptive Brake (ABR)
IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.
 
16 Check fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir, correct if necessary    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Brake system - inspect fluid level   AP42.10-P-4210TX
