WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz C300, 2010 Mercedes-Benz C300, 2009 Mercedes-Benz C300, and 2008 Mercedes-Benz C300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Rear axle shaft with forged center (without core hole drill hole)
Pressing out
Mount extraction and insertion tool onto rear axle shaft flange.
- Screw nut onto threaded bolt.
- Screw threaded bolt into threaded spindle of
extraction and insertion tool and tighten.
- Push out rear axle shaft using
extraction and insertion tool and remove.
Inserting
On rear axle shafts which are glued in before installation clean the splined shaft profile and rear axle shaft flange mechanically. If the rear axle shaft is difficult to install, cut an M8 thread into the shaft so that it can be pulled in with the extraction and insertion tool.
Screw the bracket (039) onto the shaft journal of the rear axle shaft (37) and clamp in vise.

- Drill core hole bore to a depth of approx. 20 mm using a 4 mm dia. drill bit (dimension a), cooling and lubricating the drill bit in the process.
- Remove 4 mm dia. drilling bush (removable) (039a) with mounting bolt (039c).
- Drill core hole bore to a depth of approx. 20 mm using a 6.8 mm dia. drill bit (dimension a), cooling and lubricating the drill bit in the process.
- Precut thread M8 using a stage 1 and 2 tap.
Unscrew bracket (039) from rear axle shaft and clamp rear axle shaft in vise.
- Finish cutting M8 threads with stage 3 tap.
- Using the extraction and insertion tool
, draw the rear axle shaft into the rear axle shaft flange.
Remove extraction and insertion tool from rear axle shaft flange.
