Location 

Hall sensors are at the front on the cylinder head, in front of the respective camshaft.

Task 

Hall sensors detect the camshaft position for the following functions in a contact-less manner via pulse wheels on the camshaft:

• Camshaft adjustment
• Synchronization of the ignition and injection sequence (detection of ignition TDC).
• Emergency start for a defective crankshaft Hall sensor (B70)

Design 

They consist of a cast in Hall sensor in a plastic housing with a 3-pin connector.

Function 

Detection of camshaft position takes place via the position of the pulse wheel on camshafts. Electronics in Hall sensors ensure that the camshaft positions are already detected at engine OFF. This results in an improvement in the exhaust levels because the optimal injected quantity of fuel can be assigned to each cylinder immediately when the engine is started (quick-start function).

Four signals are generated per camshaft per camshaft rotation. Here the signal switches between about 5 V "High" and 0 Volt "Low". If an opening (window) in the pulse wheel is opposite the sensor, the signal is approx. 5 V.

Window positions at pulse wheels 

The distance to the respective pulse wheel is 0.2 to 1.8 mm.

Specified angles on the pulse wheel are camshaft angles (NW). They must be doubled to obtain the crankshaft angle (KW).
