Location
The instrument cluster is located in the dashboard on the driver-side.
Task
The instrument cluster is responsible for the display of operating conditions and convenience displays as well as for the edition of visual and acoustic indicator and warning messages. The instrument cluster has the following tasks:
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Actuation of internal components
Reading in of signals
The instrument cluster reads in the input factors via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
- Drive train CAN (CAN C)
Direct line
- Circuit 31
- Circuit 30
- Circuit 15
Interior CAN
Input factors are read in by the following control units over the interior CAN:
- Radio (A2) (with code (EF5) MB Audio 20 CD radio, (NTG 2.5))
- COMMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) (with code (EU1) COMMAND, APS)
- Front signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) (N10/1)
- Rear signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) (N10/2)
- EZS control unit (N73)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Tire pressure monitor control unit (N88)
(on model 463.237/249/271 and model 463.202/222/236/248/270/303/306/336/340/341/346 with code (RY6) Tire pressure monitor (TPM))
- Trailer recognition control unit (N28/1)
(with code (Q55) Trailer hitch ball head, low reinforced)
- Left front door control unit (N69/1)
- Right front door control unit (N69/2)
Actuation of internal components
Components are actuated with the following lines:
- Direct line
- Overhead control panel control unit (N70)
Drive train CAN
- CDI control unit (N3/9) (on diesel engine)
- ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (on gasoline engine)
- ESP control unit (N30/4)
- Electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5)
- VGS control unit (N15/7)
- ETC [EGS] control unit (N15/3) (with transmission 722.6)
- Fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) (Y3/8n4) (with transmission 722.9)
Evaluation of input factors
The read-in input factors are evaluated by the integrated processor of the instrument cluster and the corresponding components are actuated.
Direct line
All the internal actuators (e.g. indicator and warning lamps, stepper motors and displays) are actuated directly by the instrument cluster.
- Actuate the instrument illumination (A1e8) depending on:
- Automatic light switch daylight sensor (B32/1)
- Phototransistor
- Instrument illumination variable resistor
- Rotary light switch (S1s1)
- Output of status indication and fault messages via the multifunction display
- Actuation of indicator lamps and warning lamps
- Output of acoustic warnings
The acoustic signals are generated as follows:
- Actuation of internal warning buzzer (A1h1): Warning tone with a frequency of f = 2.5 Hz
- Actuation of audible turn signal indicator (A1h2): turn signal knocking
- Actuation of the following stepper motors:
- Coolant temperature display
- Fuel level indicator in instrument cluster
- Tachometer
- Electronic speedometer
- Output of status indications via:
- Outside temperature indicator
- Electronic clock
- Gear indicator
- Transmission mode display
