Remove/install stabilizer bar on rear axle - AR32.20-P-0315T

MODEL 211.0 /2 with CODE (489) AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension)

MODIFICATION NOTES

31.3.06 Pinch off filler hose of fuel tank replaced by Empty fuel tank Step 16

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. AS42.46-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing  when working on springs or spring bodies that are under load Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
Inspect special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection).
Wear protective gloves.

NOTES While working on the rear axle, care must be taken to ensure that the surface of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected    
IMPORTANTInstallation  Tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components only when vehicle is in the ready-to-drive condition.    
1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system".
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.

2 Secure vehicle on the lifting platform   AR00.60-P-0100T
3 Empty air springs (41) completely using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489 AR32.22-P-1500-04T 
NOTES Special information on AIRmatic   AH32.22-P-1000-02T

    NOTESInstallation:  The filling process for the air springs must be observed, otherwise the air springs will be irreparably damaged. AR32.22-P-1500-03T

4 Remove rear wheels.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove and install wheels   AP40.10-P-4050Z
5 Remove crossmember (35) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA62.30-P-1001-01A 
6.1 Remove rear muffler Engine 646 AR49.10-P-4951T
    Engine 642 AR49.10-P-4951TI
6.2 Remove exhaust system as of flange connection Engine 647 AR49.10-P-7280T

6.3 Remove complete exhaust system Engine 112, 113, 156 AR49.10-P-7000TB

7 Remove rear section components on underfloor paneling   AR61.30-P-1001T
8 Detach and remove heat shields (105c, 105d)   AR49.00-P-1000-01T
9 Detach propeller shaft (106) from flange on rear axle center assembly (50) IMPORTANT Flexible disk remains on propeller shaft.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Attach the propeller shaft to the rear axle differential (50).

10 Detach fitting sleeves of flexible coupling on flange of rear axle center assembly (50)   AR41.10-P-0050-09DA
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS Prepare drift for loosening fitted sleeves in flexible couplings.   WF58.50-P-4110-01A
11 Unscrew the bolts from the propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove the rear part of the propeller shaft (106) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Do not tighten the bolts of the propeller shaft center support bearing until you have secured the flexible coupling to the rear axle differential (50).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Assemble propeller shaft in correct position.

12 Detach brake cables (86) from brackets (86a, 86b) on rear axle    
13 Unhook brake cables (86) at automatic cable slack adjuster of parking brake.   AR42.20-P-0525T
14.1 Remove rear brake pads Except model 211.076 /077 /276 /277
NOTES Use hook to suspend brake caliper from vehicle to reduce loads on brake hose and avoid destroying brake hose.

NOTES Use hook to suspend brake caliper from vehicle to reduce loads on brake hose and avoid destroying brake hose.

15.1 Unclip electrical lines from right and left rear axle rpm sensor, rear axle level sensor (B22/3), brake wear indicator sensor and from right and left rear axle damping valve unit from all retaining clamps (arrows) Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489  
15.2 Unclip electrical feed lines of left and right rear axle rpm sensors, of brake wear sensor and of rear axle level sensor (B22/3) from all retaining clamps (arrows). Vehicles without AIRmatic  
16 Empty fuel tank (18) Vehicles with diesel engine except engine 629 AR47.10-P-4001T

17 Remove filler hose (17) of fuel tank (18)    
18 Support rear axle with COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission platform and COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission jack at rear axle center assembly (50) and lash securely COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS *WE58.40-Z-1018-11A 
    COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS *WE58.40-Z-1030-11A 
19 Detach rear axle carrier (1) from front of frame; to do this, unscrew bolts (1a) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.10-P-1001-01E 
20 Carefully lower rear axle NOTES When lowering the rear axle carrier (1), make sure that the fuel tank (18) is not damaged by the bolts (2a, 2b) and the filler hose (17) is not damaged.  
21 Unclip linkage (3) of level sensor on stabilizer bar (77).    
22 Detach stabilizer bar (77) from left and right link rod (6k) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.20-P-1002-04G 
23 Detach left and right stabilizer bar mount (77b) from rear axle carrier (1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.20-P-1003-04G 
24 Remove stabilizer bar (77) to the right    
25 Check condition of air springs (41). Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489 AR32.22-P-1500-05T 
26 Install in the reverse order    
27 Check oil level in rear axle center assembly (50) and correct if necessary NOTES In order to avoid damage to the rear axle center assembly, it is absolutely essential to follow the work procedure and the Specifications for Operating Fluids. AR35.31-P-0520-03I
28.1 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select "Initial startup after repair"/"Remove/ install brake pads" menu item.
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.

DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
28.2 Press the brake pedal several times until the brake pads contact the brake disks Vehicles with Adaptive Brake (ABR)
IMPORTANT A firm resistance must be noticeable at the brake pedal.
