The vehicle weight at the rear axle is borne by the compressible air enclosed in the air bellows (1).The air bellows (1), designed as hose roller bellows, are made of rubber. In the event of dynamic loading while driving, the air bellows (1) unroll parallel to the McPherson axle and thus ensure the required spring travel. The unrolling zone of the left rear axle damping valve unit (Y53) and the right rear axle damping valve unit (Y54) is sealed to prevent contamination entering through the rubber boot (2).

The vehicle level is adjusted by increasing or reducing the air pressure in the air bellows (1) via the left rear level control valve (Y36/3) or via the right rear level control valve (Y36/4), which shortens or extends the left rear axle damping valve unit (Y53) or right rear axle damping valve unit (Y54).
