Remove/install rear axle shaft - AR35.30-P-0620SX

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surface of all aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected    
1 Move parking brake into the assembly position using STAR DIAGNOSIS    
2 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100SX
3 Remove rear wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels   AP40.10-P-4050SX
4 Remove twelve-point collar nut (12) from rear axle shaft (37)   AR35.30-P-0115-01SX 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.30-P-1001-01I 
    SPECIAL TOOL *220589010900
5 Detach rear axle brake caliper   AR42.10-P-0080SX
6 Remove brake disc   AR42.10-P-0220SX
7 Detach rear brake cable from wheel carrier (7)   AR42.20-P-0525SX
8 Detach rpm sensor (L6/3 or L6/4) from wheel carrier (7); to do this, remove bolt (10) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA42.30-P-1001-02I 
9 Detach stabilizer bar link rod (6V) from wheel carrier (7) Vehicles with AIRmatic  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.20-P-1001-04G 
10 Raise wheel carrier (7) using transmission jack and transmission platform until rear axle shaft (37) is roughly horizontal INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Tighten the bolted connections of the torque strut, camber strut and thrust arm as well as of the tie rod.  
11 Remove parking brake shoes   AR42.20-P-0530SX
12 Detach brake cover plate (8) Vehicles without top protection
IMPORTANT The brake cover plate cannot be removed, but it has to be twisted to allow the bolts of the struts to be removed from the wheel carrier (7).		  
13 Detach camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Bolt on camber strut loosely.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 216 *BA35.20-P-1002-02H 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 without top protection *BA35.20-P-1003-02A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 with maximum protection, code Z07 *BA35.20-P-1004-02A 
14 Detach tie rod (4) from wheel carrier (7). INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Bolt on tie rod loosely.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 216 *BA35.20-P-1001-04H 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 *BA35.20-P-1001-04C 
15 Detach thrust arm (3) from wheel carrier (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Bolt on thrust arm loosely.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 216 *BA35.20-P-1002-05F 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 without top protection except model 221.176/179 *BA35.20-P-1002-05A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221.176/179 without top protection *BA35.20-P-1003-05A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221.176 with maximum protection, code Z07 *BA35.20-P-1004-05A 
16 Detach torque strut (5) from wheel carrier (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Bolt on torque strut loosely  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.20-P-1001-03H 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.20-P-1002-03H 
17 Lower wheel carrier (7)    
18.1 Detach wheel carrier (7) from spring control arm and pull off from rear axle shaft Vehicles with top protection, code Z07  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.20-P-1002-01A 
18.2 Fold down wheel carrier (7) and pull rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle shaft flange Vehicles without top protection
NOTES Suspend rear axle shaft with a hook on vehicle to prevent damage to the rubber boot on the rear axle shaft.
If rear axle shaft is jammed:
↓
Press rear axle shaft out of the rear axle shaft flange.		 AR35.30-P-0115-03SX

    SPECIAL TOOL *210589014000
19 Lever rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle center assembly (50) IMPORTANT Do not fasten an assembly lever to the protection ring (37a). Support assembly lever on differential e.g with a socket wrench.  
20 Take out rear axle shaft (37) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new retaining ring (37o) on inner splined profile.  
INSPECT Checking     
21 Check constant velocity joints and rubber boots IMPORTANT If the constant velocity joint is defective, the rear axle shaft (37) must be completely replaced.
If damaged or leaking:
↓
Replace constant velocity joint or rubber boot on rear axle shaft.		 AR35.30-P-0661P 
22 Check radial sealing ring on side of rear axle differential (50) If damaged or leaking:
↓
Replace new radial sealing ring on side of rear axle differential.		 AR35.31-P-0545SX 
23 Install in the reverse order    
24 Check oil level in rear axle center assembly (50) and correct if necessary   AR35.31-P-0520-03SX

25 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200SX
