Dismantling constant-velocity joint, inspecting for wear, assembly - AR35.30-P-0661-03P

Dismantle constant velocity joint

  1. Mark position of joint ring (37c), joint hub (37d) and ball retainer (37f) relative to each other.

  2. Align the rear axle shaft (37a) so that the narrow web (arrow) on the joint hub (37d) point upwards.

  3. Use a suitable tool to press the two top balls out of their race.

  4. Tilt rear halfshaft (37a) and turn slightly to remove from the joint ring (37c).

IMPORTANT Hold the remaining balls in place when removing.

  5. Remove the remaining balls from the joint ring (37c).
  6. Remove ball cage from joint hub.
  7. Clean all parts.

  8. Check constant velocity joint

  9. Check joint ring, joint hub, ball retainer ball raceways and ball bearings for depressions (pitting) and traces of wear (arrows).

IMPORTANT If these components display major wear then the entire rear halfshaft should be replaced. Smooth areas and running marks caused by the balls are no reason to replace the rear axle shaft.

IMPORTANT If the outer constant velocity joint is defective, then the rear axle shaft must be replaced.

  10. Assembling CV joint

  11. Insert rear axle shaft (37a) with joint hub (37d) and ball retainer (37f) in the joint ring (37c) and align so that the balls can be inserted.
  12. Install ball cage on joint hub.

IMPORTANT Watch the alignment marks made earlier. If no markings were made, the ball cage must be installed on the joint hub with each wide step on the joint hub aligned opposite a narrow step on the ball cage.
