Disassembling constant velocity joint
- Mark relative positions of joint ring (37c), joint hub (37d) and ball retainer (37f).
- Align rear axle shaft (37a) so that the narrow step (arrow) on the joint hub (37d) points upwards.
- Use a suitable tool to press the two top balls out of their race.
- Align rear axle shaft (37a) and turn slightly to remove from the joint ring (37c).
Hold the remaining balls in place when removing.
- Remove the remaining balls from the joint ring (37c).
- Remove ball retainer from joint hub.
- Clean all parts.
- Check ball races of joint ring (37c), joint hub (37d), ball retainer (37f) and balls for pitting and signs of wear (arrows).
If these components exhibit severe wear, then the entire rear axle shaft must be replaced. Flat spots and running marks caused by the balls are no reason to replace the rear axle shaft.
If the outer constant velocity joint is defective, the rear axle shaft must be replaced in order to prevent further damage and to guarantee proper functioning.
- Insert rear axle shaft (37a) with joint hub (37d) and ball retainer (37f) into joint ring (37c) and align so that the balls can be inserted.
- Install ball retainer on joint hub.
Observe the markings made earlier. If no markings were made, the ball retainer must be installed on the joint hub with each wide step on the joint hub aligned opposite a narrow step on the ball retainer.
- Insert balls one after the other.
