Arrangement

The supercharger is located to the left of the cylinder housing.

Task

The supercharger compresses the intake air and therefore increases the degree of filling of the cylinder. This increases the engine torque, especially in the lower speed range.

Design

The supercharger is a helical compressor, which functions with internal compression according to the principle of positive displacement.

The two counter-rotating 3-blade (twisted by 60°) rotors are connected by two oil-lubricated gear teeth (the constant velocity gearing). A tight gap (approx. 0.2 mm) is achieved to ensure a seal of the two rotors themselves and to the housing (working area).

Function

Fig 3: Identifying Supercharger Function
G04732089

The drive is performed via a poly-V-belt directly by the crankshaft.

The intake air is fed via the axially located opening to the working area of the supercharger. As a result of the rotation and the geometry of the two rotors, the working chamber is sealed off to the environment after the inducted air flows in. The intake air volumes are compressed as a result of the working chamber between housing and the two rotors being reduced. By means of further rotation, the compressed intake air (charge air) is pushed out to the radially located opening. The charge air not required (when air recirculation flap is open) is once again supplied to the supercharger through the recirculated air opening (C).

Using the supercharger, a maximum boost pressure of 500 mbar is obtained in the intake manifold.
