- Push pin wrench (040) and socket wrench bit (040a)onto joint flange (41)and carefully tighten twelve-point collar nut until the specified friction torque is reached.
When tightening twelve-point collar nut, rotate drive pinion several times and apply some light blows to rear axle housing to ensure that tapered rollers are correctly positioned in bearing track.
Shown: 185 mm dia. rear axle center assembly
- To check
mount torque measuring instrument (040b) with
connecting piece (040c) onto
socket (040a)and crank drive pinion with approx. 60 rpm, in doing so read off the friction torque.
If the friction torque exceeds the specified torque, remove the drive pinion again and insert a new spacer sleeve.

Under no circumstances may the friction torque be reduced by loosening the twelve-point collar nut (40) as otherwise the preload of the tapered roller bearings (43, 46) would be too low. This would result in play in the drive pinion (47) while driving and with it rear axle drive noise.

The tapered roller bearings (43, 46) of the drive pinion (47) must be installed with a certain pre-tension. This constant remaining preload is achieved by the spacer sleeve (44) located between the tapered roller bearing inner race and the drive pinion (47) being compressed when the twelve-point collar nut (40) is tightened.
If the friction torque is too low when the drive pinion (47) is spun, i.e. the preload of the tapered roller bearings (43, 46) is too low, the twelve point collar nut (40) should be tightened a little more. If the specified friction torque is fallen below the drive pinion (47) is to be removed again and a new spacer sleeve (44) is to be inserted.
