The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) allows portable CTELs (A34/6) from different manufacturers (e, g. Siemens, Motorola, Nokia) to be operated in the vehicle. The system installed in the vehicle is able to communicate with various portable cellular telephones (A34/6). It is only necessary to install the corresponding portable cellular telephone (A34/6) required for the UPCI portable cellular telephone holder (universal portable cellular telephone interface) (A34/15) on the UPCI connector plate

Telephone operation

The telephone system can be operated as follows:

Direct at radio (A2)
With the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1)
With code (813) Voice control system (VCS)

The volume can be adjusted separately for the telephone mode.

Function

After a request made via the radio (A2) the telephone radio signals are transmitted and received using the telephone antenna (A2/22). The signals are transmitted over the E-net compensator (A28/3) to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1). The E-net compensator (A28/10) has the task of compensating for losses caused by the higher transmission frequency of the E-net by means of amplification. The telephone is illustrated by a symbol, if it is operational, in the display of the radio (A2). The reception field strength of the telephone after plugging it into the UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) is also displayed. All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the media-oriented system transport (MOST).

To communicate with the MOST subscribers, the portable CTEL (A34/6) requires an interface, the UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) control unit (N123/1).

The rechargeable battery for portable cellular telephone (A34/6) is loaded via the UPCI control unit (universal portable cellular telephone interface) (N123/1).

Charging is accomplished automatically as soon as the UPCI control unit (universal portable cellular telephone interface) (N123/1) is activated regardless whether the portable cellular telephone (A34/6) is switched on or off. The radio (A2) has the following telephone functions:

Automatic disabling of telephone card when the Personal Identification Number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
Direct dialing of the telephone number via the numerical keypad, display of the name of the person called (if the number entered is known)
Speed dial: The first 10 memory locations can be dialed by pressing one key only or all other memory locations can be dialed by entering the 3-digit memory location number
Dialing from lists in the memory, sorted by
- Memory location number
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of the last 10 numbers dialed
Display of caller's number (if the number is also transmitted)
Display of name (if number is known)
SMS reading
Telephone book processing
Note book toggling

Hands-free mode

During a phone call it must be possible for the user to hold the conversation using the hands-free system. For this reason, there is a hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) in the mirror housing of the inside rearview mirror unit (A67). From there the microphone signals are sent straight to the UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) control unit (N123/1), digitized, and transmitted to the radio (A2) via the MOST.

The signals are processed again in the radio (A2) and sent to the vehicle speakers. Hands-free conversation is controlled by pressing the "Micro On, Micro Off" button on the radio (A2).

During a hands-free telephone call the audio source is automatically muted. Operation can only take place via the multifunction steering wheel or the radio (A2).

Because of legal stipulations prohibiting the use of a telephone without a hands-free system while driving, it is not possible to telephone hands-free when the portable CTEL (A34/6) is removed from the UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) holder (A34/15).

Create SMS Process SMS

In the basic service menu the "Mail" button leads to the creation, dispatch and administration of text messages (short message service - SMS).

There are the following options:

Call up mail inbox
Call up mail outbox
Call up mail draft
Create new messages
Perform mail adjustments

The characters can be entered with the dialing assistance or the 12-key keypad. These functions are also used for sending SMS messages; a receiver can be specified or dialed from the telephone book.

Data safety, SMS buffer

When the power supply fails, the characters stored in the buffer are saved. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost. When switched off in a controlled manner, no characters are lost.
