General information on riveting - AH60.00-P-0003-01N

General information 

DIN 8593 describes rivets as non-detachable fasteners for parts of the same or different materials. The connection is accomplished by the deformation of the fastening element (rivet).

Riveting is a type of connection which has been tested and approved by DaimlerChrysler and which has significant advantages over MIG plug welding in terms of corrosion protection following repair work.

Deformation of joined parts due to heating does not occur during riveting as connections are made cold.

For this reason, the priorities for fastening techniques for repair have been redefined as follows:

  1. Resistance spot welding
  2. Rivets
  3. MAG plug welds and other weld joints

Rivet types, their application and positioning are described in the respective repair documents.

For the repair of hybrid construction vehicles, joints are both blind riveted and bonded.

Bonding achieves greater strength and ensures that joints are properly sealed.

IMPORTANTStandard bonded load-bearing sections 

For standard bonded load-bearing sections which are not bonded again following accident repair, the number of rivets is specified in the specific repair description.

Always observe these specifications to ensure operating stability

IMPORTANTAlways seal riveted flanges with body sealant.

Preparation of rivet points 

Always drill and deburr rivet holes.

To prevent notching in the rivet and good flow characteristics of the shaft material in the hole, the edges of the rivet holes should be chamfered or countersunk.

Ultra-high strength materials 

When processing ultra-high strength materials, use only the high tensile strength rivets approved by DC.

With this, it is only possible to use a riveter with increased pulling force (see Workshop Equipment Manual).

Rivet materials 

As a matter of principle, the rivet should be of the same material as the components to be connected, however at least of the same type of material in order to avoid damage from electrochemical corrosion or loosening as a result of various thermal expansion rates.
