Notes on handling the battery when laying up the vehicle - AH54.10-P-0004-01V

Model 169.0/3, 171, 245.2

IMPORTANT Should vehicles, with batteries which have been put into operation or new batteries, stand unused for a longer period (G1), the batteries (G1) should be recharged completely.

So that the batteries (G1) do not sulfate due to self-discharge, it is best that they receive a continuous preservation charge with a charging current of 40 to 100 mA for each 100 Ah nominal capacity. The charging current is such that a cell voltage of 2.2 to 2.25 V per cell results.

Instead of the preservation charge, the batteries (G1) can also be charged at intervals of a maximum of one month with a charging current of max. 10% of nominal capacity, e.g. for a 100 Ah battery (G1) max. 10 A charging current until the full charge level is reproduced. This can take 3 to 4 hours.

In addition, with this procedure batteries (G1) should be discharged before every third recharge with a charging current of 5 to 10 A for each 100 Ah nominal capacity down to the voltage limit of 1.75 V per cell and then fully charged again.

Depending on the discharging and charging current used this additional process takes 1 to 2 days including recharging.

The plates of batteries which are filled but not in use (G1) are constantly under attack from battery acid. We therefore recommend not having batteries (G1) standing unused for longer than 1 to 2 years. Reduced performance can be reckoned with after this time.
