Damage code Cause Remedy
00 001 70 Running-in process for engine. IMPORTANT The following remedy and repair recommendations, e.g. conditioning drives on the vehicle, are only permissible for the specified validity ranges and up until the first maintenance inspection of the vehicle.
IMPORTANT Complaints about oil consumption are submitted due to repeated oil level messages displayed in the instrument cluster (IC).
Text in IC:
Procedure for vehicles outside this period, see: ↓
  Model 219, 211 up to 06/2005: 1 Measure oil consumption AR18.00-P-0025QB
"Pour in 1 l of oil at next refueling stop." Model 171, 164, 203, 209 as of production startup, model 219, 211 as of 06/2005: "Check oil level at next refueling stop."
IMPORTANT Engine oil consumption is unavoidable from a technical viewpoint and depends on driving style, road conditions and climatic conditions. Documentation and evaluation of oil refilling to date (according to customer).
Frequent driving at high engine speeds increases engine oil consumption. The viscosity and quality of the used engine oil have an effect on oil consumption. IMPORTANT If the customer states the oil consumption to be less than 0.3 I/1000 km, no further action is necessary.
If the oil consumption is greater than 0.3 I/1000 km, perform oil consumption measurement; see: ↓
2 Inspect engine for external oil loss.
IMPORTANT Engine 272 is equipped with an oil level switch. It is not possible to read out oil consumption values using the DAS. 3 Condition vehicle for oil consumption measuring drive.
IMPORTANT To do this, check the oil level and correct it if necessary, and drive the vehicle for 1 hour at high load and high engine speed appropriate to local circumstances.
Vary the gear ranges during the drive. This has a positive effect on the running-in process.
IMPORTANT Refilling the oil between the oil change intervals is normal and does not necessarily indicate increased oil consumption. 4 Prepare engine for oil consumption measuring drive. SM18.00-P-0002A
    5 Perform measuring drive.
IMPORTANT Customer should continue driving the vehicle without altering driving style until the oil level warning is displayed again.

6 Determine and document oil consumption. SM18.00-P-0002-01A
Test sheet for excessive oil consumption OF18.00-P-3000-03A
IMPORTANT Replacing the valve stem seal does not remedy the problem.
The engine running-in process is affected greatly by the conditions under which the vehicle is operated and also by the driving style of the customer. In some cases, the running-in distance may be greater than 10000 km.
IMPORTANT If the mileage of the vehicle is less than 10000 km and the oil consumption is less than 0.8 l/1000 km, then:
7 Check oil level, correct it if necessary and continue to monitor the vehicle.
IMPORTANT If the oil consumption is less than or equal to 0.3 I/1000 km, the engine is OK.
IMPORTANT If the mileage of the vehicle is between 10000 km and approx. 20000 km and the oil consumption is greater than 0.3 l/1000 km, the engine must be replaced; see: ↓
    8 Remove/install/replace engine
IMPORTANT For vehicles with mileages > 20000 km, see: ↓
    Measure oil consumption AR18.00-P-0025QB
IMPORTANT Note the conditions under which the customer uses the vehicle.
IMPORTANT Only engines that have undergone an oil consumption measuring drive may be replaced. The completed test sheet must always be enclosed with the returned engine.
Conditioning drives on vehicles outside the validity range must not be invoiced via a warranty claim.
Warranty claims submitted without complete documentation will be rejected. Test runs are performed randomly in order to check the plausibility of the results from the performed oil consumption measuring drives.
