Remove/install instrument panel - AR68.10-P-1000V

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/Install    
DANGER Risk of injury.  Injuries may result when performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units. Store airbag unit with deployment face up, do not subject to temperatures above 100°C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.

IMPORTANT Legal regulations on handling and storing airbags and emergency tensioning retractors   AH91.00-P-0004-01A
1 Open Vario roof completely IMPORTANT See Operating Instructions  
2 Move driver's and passenger seat toward rear IMPORTANT See Operating Instructions  
3 Unclip cover (2) for instrument panel (2) on left and right sides in cutout (arrow) and remove SPECIAL TOOL Fig 4
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Ensure that covers (2) are seated correctly in instrument panel (1)  
4 Remove left and right paneling from A-pillar   AR68.30-P-4050V 
5 Remove steering column switch module Refer to: ↓  
    Remove/install clock spring contact
IMPORTANT Do not remove spring contact from steering column switch module
AR46.10-P-0200V
6 Remove instrument cluster   AR54.30-P-6015V
7 Unscrew bolts (4) in recess for instrument cluster    
8 Remove cover below left of instrument panel   AR68.10-P-1500V 
9 Unscrew bolts (5)    
10 Disconnect electrical connector from exterior lamp switch (S1)    
11 Unscrew rosette (3) with claw-type wrench and lay EIS control module (N73) toward front with lines connected SPECIAL TOOL Fig 5
12 Remove cover below instrument panel on right   AR68.10-P-1520V 
13 Remove glove compartment   AR68.10-P-1400V 
14 Disconnect electrical connectors from squibs of passenger airbag unit and unscrew bolts (6) SPECIAL TOOL *BA91.60-P-1004-01A 
15 Remove cover on center console   AR68.20-P-2350V 
16 Remove center console   AR68.20-P-2000V 
17 Unscrew nuts (7)    
18.1 Remove Parktronic system (PTS) warning indicator in instrument panel Only on vehicles with code (220a) Parktronic system (PTS) and without code (581b) Comfort automatic air conditioning AR54.65-P-0003V
18.2 Remove sun sensor Only on vehicles with code (581b) Comfort automatic air conditioning AR83.40-P-6720V
19 Remove speaker in instrument panel   AR82.62-P-7833V
20.1 Remove HEAT control and operating unit On vehicles with code (580a) Automatic air conditioning
or without code (581b) Comfort automatic air conditioning

20.2 Remove AAC control and operating unit or comfort AAC control and operating unit On vehicles with code (580a) Automatic air conditioning
or with code (581b) Comfort automatic air conditioning

21.1 Remove radio On vehicles with code (523) Audio 20 MB radio
or with code (525) MB 50 APS radio
or with code (535) Audio 20 CD radio, USA

21.2 Remove COMAND operating, display and control unit On vehicles with code (527a) COMAND APS (with navigation)
or with code (529) HIGH Class Japan
or with code (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation)

22 Unscrew bolt (8).    
23 Unscrew bolts (9) and lay hand brake lever (10) toward rear with cables hooked in TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA42.20-P-1003-01A 
24 Remove instrument panel (1) IMPORTANT Helper required  
25.1 Remove exterior lamp switch (S1) from instrument panel (1) Only when replacing instrument panel (1).  
26.1 Unclip front center air nozzle (11) Only when replacing instrument panel (1).  
27.1 Unclip left and right center air nozzle (12) Only when replacing instrument panel (1).  
28.1 Unclip left and right side air nozzle (13) Only when replacing instrument panel (1).  
29.1 Remove front passenger airbag unit Only when replacing instrument panel (1). AR91.60-P-0680V
30 Install in the reverse order
