REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
NOTES Before starting work, the area around the oil cooling lines must be thoroughly cleaned on the transmission (5) in the area around the separation points. Even the smallest dirt particles in the hydraulic components can lead to malfunctions and a total failure of the transmission (5).    
1 Move selector lever into position "N"    
2 Release parking brake    
3 Open engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000V
4 Disconnect ground cable of battery   AR54.10-P-0003V
NOTES -   -
5 Raise vehicle with lifting platform   AR00.60-P-1000V
6 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105V
7.1 Detach electrical connector of heated O2 probes Model 171.454/456 AR07.52-P-5303VA
7.2 Remove complete exhaust system Model 171.473 AR49.10-P-7000VT
8 Unclip all electrical feed lines from retaining clamps at transmission (5).    
9 Remove shield (1) and detach electrical connector from electric controller unit.   AR27.40-P-0700-01V 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA27.40-P-1014-01A 
10 Detach shift rod (15) at range selector lever (16) of transmission (5) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Install new retaining clamp (14). AR27.60-P-0990VA 
11 Support transmission (5) with COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission jack and COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission platform and lash down securely. COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS *WE58.40-Z-1030-11A 
    COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS *WE58.40-Z-1018-11A 
12 Unscrew bolts (2, 4) and remove rear engine support (3) with rear engine mount INSPECT Check rear engine mount for wear and replace if necessary. AR22.10-P-1160VA
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Attach ground (transmission) (W49) to rear engine mount.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, rear engine crossmember to body *BA22.10-P-1006-01S 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt of rear engine mount to transmission *BA22.10-P-1004-01S 
    Engine 272  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, rear engine crossmember to body *BA22.10-P-1003-01O 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt of rear engine mount to transmission *BA22.10-P-1008-01O 
13 Remove front flexible coupling (20v) IMPORTANT If the fitted sleeves are jammed: ↓ AR41.10-P-0050-02V
    Loosen fitting sleeves of flexible coupling (20v). AR41.10-P-0050-09V
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS   Prepare drift for loosening fitted sleeves in flexible couplings. WF58.50-P-4110-01A
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Attach front propeller shaft (20) to transmission (5). AR41.10-P-0050-07V
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA41.10-P-1001-01A 
14 Detach torque converter (9) from driven plate NOTES Do not use an impact wrench or compressed-air tool, otherwise the threaded unions of the drive plate will be damaged. AR27.20-P-0100-01A

15 Press torque converter (9) evenly off driven plate using SPECIAL TOOL long wedge NOTES Do not damage torque converter (9) and driven plate.

16 Detach right and left oil cooling line from transmission (5) and engine oil pan and place to the side. NOTES Do not bend or kink oil cooling lines.
IMPORTANT Seal connections on transmission (5) and on the oil cooling lines with SPECIAL TOOL stop plugs

    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace O-rings.

17 Detach starter from transmission (5). IMPORTANT Place starter to the side with lines connected and secure to prevent it falling down.

18 Remove bolts (8) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Secure bracket of electric feed lines at transmission (5).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA27.40-P-1008-01A 
19 Remove transmission (5) from below NOTES Secure torque converter (9) to prevent it from falling out.
IMPORTANT Installation: Align the holes of the torque converter (9) with the threaded unions in the driven plate.
 
20 Remove torque converter (9) SPECIAL TOOL with grab handles If necessary AR27.20-P-0500-01W 
INSPECT Checking     
21 Check threaded unions in driven plate IMPORTANT If the threaded unions are damaged or loose the driven plate must be replaced.  
22 Install in the reverse order    
23 Perform basic programming   AR00.19-P-0200V
24 Fill transmission (5) with transmission oil When installing new transmission (5) or if the transmission oil has been drained. AR27.00-P-0270W 
25 Check transmission oil level; correct if necessary   AR27.00-P-0100W 
26 Read out fault memory with STAR DIAGNOSIS and erase if necessary. STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnosis system *WH58.30-Z-1048-13A 
27 Perform transmission adaptation A Transmission adaptation must be carried out after exchanging or repairing the transmission (5).  
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

28 Carry out engine test run and check transmission (5) for function and leaks
