	Removal/installation
	Risk of injury  caused by backrest suddenly folding forward if release lever is accidentally operated during inspection and repair work	When working on the seat, be careful not to accidentally release the backrest mechanism allowing the seat to fold forward. Keep body parts clear of the backrest travel area.	AS91.00-Z-0005-01V
	Risk of injury.  Injuries may result when performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.	Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100°C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.
1	Switch off the ignition and remove the transmitter key from the EIS control unit
2	Remove the backrest upholstery from the left or right front seat (2)	On vehicles without code (873) heated seats, left and right front seats	AR91.10-P-1090V
		On vehicles with code (873) heated seats, left and right front seats	AR91.10-P-1090VA
3	Cover the seat cushion with clean cloths, drill out the rivet heads from the rivets (4) and from the rivet (3) at the sidebag unit (1)	Use care when drilling out the rivet head (3); otherwise, the sleeve underneath it may be damaged. If this sleeve is damaged, the sidebag unit (1) must be replaced. Similarly, if chips from drilling or particles from the rivet get into the sidebag unit (1), then the sidebag unit (1) must also be replaced. Take care not to damage the paint on the backrest frame (8), otherwise the backrest frame (8) may corrode. Remove any chips and rivet particles from the front seat (2).

		Installation:  Repair the paint damage in places that will not be visible later with a touch-up pencil. Paint damage in visible areas of the backrest frame (8) cannot be touched up. If necessary, the backrest frame (8) must be replaced. See ↓	*BR00.45-Z-1012-07

4	Unscrew bolts (5)		*BA91.60-P-1015-01A
5	Unplug the ground connection (7) at the mounting clamp for the driver sidebag squib (R12/9) or the front passenger sidebag squib (R12/10)
6	Unlock and unplug the electrical connector (6) at the driver sidebag squib (R12/9) or front passenger sidebag squib (R12/10)	Installation:  the electrical connector (6) must audibly engage in position when being plugged in.
7	Remove the sidebag unit (1) from the backrest frame (8)	When installing a new sidebag unit (1), be sure to dispose of the defective sidebag unit (1) in a proper manner. Refer to: ↓
		Notes on disposing of airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units Installation:  check the housing of the sidebag unit (1) for mechanical damage. If the sidebag unit housing is visibly deformed, the sidebag unit (1) must be replaced.	OS91.00-P-0001-01A
8	Install in the reverse order
9.1	Erase fault memory	When replacing the sidebag unit (1).
	Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory		AD00.00-P-2000-04A
