Display monitoring/warning messages via indicator lamps, function - GF54.30-P-2011R

Left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) 

These are activated differently according to function:

During operation as directional indicators only one of the indicator lamps is triggered.

The steering column module (N80) sends the lamp activation signal via the interior CAN.

If one of the bulbs/light units fails, the indicator lamps are triggered at twice the normal frequency. The instrument cluster (A1) receives the information about the defective turn signal lamp from the control unit responsible for activating that particular lamp.

When the hazard warning flashers are operating, both indicator lamps are triggered. The trigger signal for the lamps is sent via the interior CAN from the lower control panel control unit (N72/). When the flashers are triggered for the anti-theft alarm system, both indicator lamps always flash. The trigger signal for the lamps is sent via the interior CAN from Driver-side SAM control unit (N10/10).

IMPORTANT While the direction indicator function is available only with "circuit 15 ON", the other flasher modes are also possible with "circuit 15 OFF".

An acoustic signal accompanies the rhythmic flashing of the indicator lamp (audible turn signal indicator (A1h2)).

When different demands for flasher operation are present, the system assigns hierarchical priorities in the following sequence:

Anti-theft alarm system flashers (highest priority) Turn signal flashers and hazard warning flashers (lowest priority)

IMPORTANT Priorities for turn signal and hazard flasher operation are assigned by the steering column module (N80), with the hazard warning flashers assuming operational priority over the turn signals.

High beam indicator lamp (A1e3) 

Trigger signals for the high beam ON and headlight flasher are sent via the interior CAN by the driver-side SAM control unit (N10/10).

Fuel reserve indicator lamp (A1e4) 

This warning lamp lights as soon as the reserve level is reached. Control of this lamp is linked to the fuel level and reserve indicator (A1p2).

Brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7) 

This lamp is actuated when the parking brake is not released while driving or if the brake fluid drops below the minimum level. The lamp's trigger signal is sent via the interior CAN from the driver-side SAM control unit (N10/10).

Seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) 

This indicator lamp is not provided in all national versions.

The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) generally lights up for t = 6 s.

Operation does not depend on the status of the driver-side, seat belt buckle (engaged or open).

The acoustic warning tone sounds for t = 6s.

The warning tone switches off sooner if the seat belt buckle on the driver's side is engaged (USA, Japan).

IMPORTANT None of the national versions monitors the status of the seat belt buckle on the front passenger's side.

The lamp's trigger signal is sent via the interior CAN from the left front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1).

Airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) 

This lamp is triggered to signal faults with the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

It is triggered directly by the restraint systems control unit (N2/7). For more detailed information, refer to the "SRS airbag indicator lamp" document.

ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) 

This lamp is actuated when there is a fault in the ABS system.

The lamp's trigger signal is sent via the engine compartment CAN from the ESP, SPS [PML] and BAS control unit (N47-5). 

ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41) 

This lamp is actuated whenever the system intervenes in the driving situation.

The lamp's trigger signal is sent via the engine compartment CAN from the ESP, SPS [PML] and BAS control unit (N47-5).

Engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) or "CHECK ENGINE" MIL (A1e26) 

The vehicles vary according to national version, and are equipped with either an engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) or a "CHECK ENGINE" MIL (A1e26).

The lamp is activated if there is a fault in the injection system, the ignition system, or the exhaust system.

The lamp's trigger signal is sent via the engine compartment CAN from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10).

DTR warning and indicator lamp (A1e59) 

This lamp is present only on vehicles equipped with Distronic (DTR) (Code 219a).

It lights up in white when the system detects a preceding vehicle. It switches to red when the distance to this vehicle falls below the safety margin. An acoustic signal also sounds. The signal to activate the light is sent via the engine compartment CAN from the DTR control unit (N63/1).

DTR function indicator lamp (A1e60) 

This lamp is present only on vehicles equipped with Distronic (DTR) (Code 219a). It is activated when Distronic (DTR) (code 219a) is switched on.

The signal for actuating the lamp is sent via the engine compartment CAN from the DTR control unit (N63/1).

Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (A1e66) 

This lamp is present only on vehicles equipped with tire pressure monitor (Code 475). The lamp lights up yellow in addition to the left multifunction display (A1p13) when the system detects rapid pressure loss of ≥ 0.2 bar/min.

The signal to activate the lamp is sent by the TPM [RDK] control unit (N88) via the interior CAN.

Light sources 

The light sources employed for the indicator lamps are bulbs. All other indicator and warning lamps in the instrument cluster (A1) are equipped with light emitting diodes (LED). In addition to activation as described above, all indication and warning lights with the exception of the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1), right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2), and high beam indicator lamp (A1e3), are also triggered during the lamp test.

IMPORTANT Triggering and illumination of some indicator and warning lamps (such as the engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) is accompanied by the appearance of a fault message on the right multifunction display (A1p15). While some categories of message can be acknowledged and cancelled, the warning and indicator lamps remain on for as long as the problem remains present. These indications cannot be cancelled.
