Emergency Call, general 

Emergency-Call (E-Call) is an automatic emergency call system which uses the availability of new technologies, such as vehicle locating via satellite and telephone to minimize the consequences of accidents.

Emergency calls and precise location description are made possible by E-call and therefore not dependent on incorrect human behavior in stress situations.

Function sequence 

An E-CALL emergency call can be triggered automatically or manually. The following actuation procedures should be distinguished:

Once an alarm has been triggered, the emergency call system control unit (EMERGENCY CALL, A35/8)  compiles an emergency call telegram, which contains information on the severity of the accident, identification of the vehicle, vehicle positioning and the type of alarm issued. The emergency call telegram is transmitted via the vehicle phone equipment.

In the event of a defective telephone antenna  a switch is made automatically to the EMERGENCY CALL backup antenna (A2/50)  .

IMPORTANT From the Japanese government:

  1. Official confirmation of the position details is determined

    by

    the police and the person involved in the accident.

  2. For this reason the position details is only supplemental information.

IMPORTANT On the E-call system for Japan, the telephone number of the PESC (Public emergency service center) is automatically dialed in the event of an emergency call, to transmit the emergency call telegram. The vehicle identification number which is also transmitted is used to call up the required customer information in the database. In combination with the position details a telephone call can now be set up with the person involved in the accident.

Once a conversation with those affected by the accident has been successfully set up, an emergency call (phone voice connection) is made to the responsible rescue service (police, fire department etc.).

Then a voice connection (via phone) is made from the vehicle to the rescue service. Then the required rescue measures are started.

IMPORTANT When it is initially started up, an authorization of the system is carried out. Without authorization an EMERGENCY CALL cannot be sent. 

If authorization is not available, the EMERGENCY CALL system  will not function.

The following structogram illustrates, greatly simplified, the sequence during an automatic triggered EMERGENCY CALL.

IMPORTANT With circuit 15R off, an EMERGENCY CALL can be manually triggered.
