The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is used to implement vehicle-related services and will also be used to implement additional services in the future. The following services are supported at present:
- Telematic Alarm Identification on Demand (emergency call system) (TELE AID) (incl. the police emergency number "911") manual/automatic
- MB-Info call
- Roadside assistance call (telediagnosis, roadside assistance)
- Tracking (dynamic identification)
- Remote door unlock (vehicle unlocking in an emergency)
- Authorization
The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is not used for normal telephone operation.
All telematics services are integrated in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4). These services operate fully and automatically in this control unit. The telematics services are displayed on the screen of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), on the left multifunction display (A1p13) and on the right multifunction display (A1p15) in the instrument cluster (A1). Since position finding is required for these services, the navigation module integrated in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is used to determine the location of the vehicle. The navigation module is a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4). This receiver allows the position of the vehicle to be precisely determined. The vehicle position and its direction of travel are determined and kept available in a history function. The navigation module receives its GPS data from the GPS antenna (A2/23).
The communications module is a cellular phone which is adapted to work with the American cellular mobile telephone network and which is only used to carry out telematics functions. The communications module transmits and receives its data over the telephone antenna (A2/22).
In order to use these services, a communications module authorized for a given service must be present in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4). This means that, as a first step, the communications module in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) must preconfigured at the factory with the telephone number of the corresponding service provider. In a second step, the user must be authorized with this telephone number in the service center. This authorization is also pre-completed to a certain extent at the factory. The telematics services are activated by pressing the corresponding button in the MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group (S93/6) or by placing a manual emergency call by pressing the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70).
After the activation of the services, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) sends an SMS to the service center. Once the SMS has been sent, a voice connection to the service center is immediately established.
Function requirements
Each telematics service must be authorized separately. If there is a malfunction or if there is no authorization available, an error message is displayed on the left multifunction display (A1p13) and on the right multifunction display (A1p15) in the instrument cluster (A1) and on the screen of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
Self-test
When circuit 15R is active, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) conducts a self-test (lasting approx. 3.5 s). If the self-test is successful, then the system is operational.
Basic functions
- Perform cyclical self-diagnoses
- Make vehicle data ready and if necessary transmit them safely
- Send data messages (by means of SMS)
- Establish telephone connections in hands-free mode
Emergency call system
If the driver should have an emergency in a remote area, a staff member at the service center can use the data transmitted from the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) to obtain an overview of the status in the vehicle interior and, based on this, take appropriate assistance measures (automatic emergency call). A manual emergency call can also be sent out at any time by pressing the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70).
The emergency call system is activated in the following two ways:
- Automatically in the event of a crash (triggered by the crash data detected by the supplemental restraint system (SRS))
- Manually by pressing the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70)
In both cases, an emergency call is automatically transmitted to the nearest emergency call center. Contents of the emergency call are:
- Vehicle position, direction of travel and tracking history
- Vehicle data and crash information (severity of accident))
- Customer identification data (telephone number)
- Status data
- Fault codes
Ending an emergency call
An emergency call is normally deactivated by the emergency call center.
After several unsuccessful attempts to place an emergency call, this function is canceled in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4).
