MODIFICATION NOTES

15.3.04 The vehicle must have a chassis alignment check after the front-axle half is installed Step 18  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates below the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
IMPORTANTInstallation  Tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components only when vehicle is in the ready-to-drive condition.    
1 Raise vehicle with lifting platform    
2 Remove front wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove and install wheels   AP40.10-P-4050Z
3 Remove hexagon collar bolt (61a) from front axle shaft (60) IMPORTANT To detach the front axle shaft (60), screw in the hexagon collar bolt (61a) again by a few turns if necessary, and then knock out the front axle shaft slightly using a rubber hammer. AR33.30-P-0620-05P 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA33.30-P-1003-02C 
4 Remove front suspension strut (40)   AR32.25-P-1017IW
5 Remove lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105M
6 Disconnect left front axle multiple circuit junction connector, major assembly compartment (X62/7) and right front axle multiple circuit junction connector, major assembly compartment (X62/6) and unclip lines IMPORTANT Connectors of damping valve unit and rpm sensor. To pull off, press in spring (11).  
7.1 Disconnect right front brake pad contact sensor connector and unclip lines Only fitted on the right-hand side.

DANGER Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
8 Unscrew brake line from brake hose (39) and seal openings NOTES Seal line connections immediately with SPECIAL TOOL plugs. The brake fluid expansion reservoir must not be allowed to run completely empty.
NOTESInstallation:  The brake hose (39) must not be twisted after tightening (risk of cracking).
IMPORTANT When slackening and tightening the brake line at the brake hose (39), make sure that its bracket does not turn. Use an open-end wrench as a countersupport on the sides of the brake hose fitting.

9 Remove torsion bar (10) and link rod (23) IMPORTANT The torsion bar (10) must be removed from the front axle carrier on account of the accessibility of the nuts on the lower transverse control arm (4). AR32.20-P-0300IW
10 Press the tie rod joint (10a) from the stub axle unit (5)   AR46.40-P-0200-02IW

11 Support front-axle half using inspection pit lift or assembly lift    
12 Detach lower wishbone (4) from front axle carrier NOTESWith repair kit installed:  Do not turn the repair bolt. When loosening and tightening the repair nut always hold the repair bolt in place, as the alignment studs for adjusting the caster will be sheared off if the bolt moves.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Note installation position if repair bolts have already been installed. Install repair bolts and washers in the same position again.
NOTESInstallation:  Do not tighten nuts until vehicle is ready to roll.

14 Press follower joint (8) out of steering knuckle (5)   AR33.20-P-0500-01N

15 Remove front-axle half; when doing so, move front axle shaft (60) out of front axle shaft flange    
16.1 Remove upper transverse control arm (6) If necessary AR33.20-P-0500I 
17 Install in the reverse order    
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Depress brake pedal several times before operating vehicle until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
