A high-performance fuel system with two fuel pumps is used in order to satisfy the requirements in respect of constant fuel pressure with a matching delivery even at high engine loads and revs.

In case of engine 113 with supercharger, the fuel system pressure is controlled to around 5.0 bar (to around 3.8 bar in case of naturally aspirated engine versions).

Model 211, 219

In case of E 55 AMG and CLS 55 AMG, two identical fuel pumps (M3) are used. These are connected parallel and are located in the right fuel tank.

Fuel flows from both the two-stage fuel pumps in the fuel delivery module (88) out of the right fuel tank chamber to the fuel filter with a fuel pressure regulator (55/1) into the left fuel tank chamber.

The fuel pressure regulator limits the fuel pressure to approx. 5.0 bar. The depressurization of the excess delivered fuel takes place via a fuel return line back into the right fuel tank chamber. This operates the suction jet pumps (95) in the fuel delivery module, which are used for filling the fuel delivery module.

A junction in the fuel pressure line to the fuel filter with an integrated fuel pressure regulator provides a part of the flow of the fuel feed line to the suction jet pump with a check valve (95a) which extracts the fuel from the deepest point of the left fuel tank chamber and pumps it into the fuel feed module.

This ensures proper emptying of the left fuel tank chamber.

The fuel pumps are actuated via the fuel pump relay (K27/1) by the ME control unit (N3/10) with a ground signal.

Models 215, 220, 230, 463

Model 215, 220, 230, 463

The fuel pump (M3) suctions the fuel from the swirl pot (55/4) in the fuel tank (75) and delivers it to the fuel filter (55), where contamination is removed. The fuel pressure is detected by the fuel pressure regulator (B4/7) after the fuel filter and is limited to approx. 5.0 bar via the fuel pressure regulator (55/2).

So that the fuel pressure of approx. 5.0 bar is available to the injection system at each operating condition, the fuel pump is controlled by the fuel pump control unit (N118) up to its maximum delivery quantity of approx. 300 liters/h. In addition, the fuel pump control unit processes the signal from the fuel pressure sensor.

The fuel pump control unit is actuated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) via the fuel pump relay (K40/5kT, N10/2kA).

Excess fuel delivered is directed back to the fuel tank by the fuel pressure regulator. At this time, this fuel operates the suction jet pump (95) in the swirl pot, which fills the swirl pot with fuel.

In order to limit the fuel feed to the suction jet pump (50 l/h), the throttle (55/3a) is located in the fuel line to the suction jet pump.

The fuel pressure regulator (55/3) limits at the same time the fuel pressure to approx. 5.3 bar.

In addition to the suction jet pump, the intank fuel pump (M3/1) also fills the swirl pot (with a delivery rate of 220 l/h) in case of a higher engine load and speed. The intank fuel pump is actuated via the intank fuel pump relay (K40/8kX, K27/5) directly by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

IMPORTANT In case of model 230 up to 06/2002, the intank fuel pump is actuated via the intank fuel pump control unit (N118/1) from an engine speed of around 5000 rpm.
