The audio mode consists of the following subfunctions, which can be activated via the "Audio" menu item:
- Function sequence for radio mode (amplitude-modulated (AM)/frequency-modulated (FM))

Audio functions are operated using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit

Function sequence for radio mode (AM/FM)
The function sequence for radio mode is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for radio mode (AM/FM) (without code (ZU8) USA version)

Function sequence for radio mode (AM/FM) (without code (ZU8) USA version)
The amplifier module 1, window antenna and amplifier module 3, window antenna (except model 463.202/303/ 306) or radio and cell phone antenna (A28) (in model 463.202/ 303/306) receive high frequency (HF) signals for the radio frequency bands FM and AM (MW, LW, SW).
The following useful signals relevant for the radio reception are modulated onto these HF signals:
- Music signals
- Speech signals
- Data signals (e.g. TMC messages (traffic information))
The signals are then transmitted via coaxial cables (FM, AM) directly (except model 463.202/303/306) or via the radio and cell phone antenna splitter (A28/1) and the HF switch antenna splitter (A28/7) (in model 463.202/303/306) to the tuners integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, where they are demodulated and undergo final amplification.
The demodulated audio signals in vehicles with code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7) are routed by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via MOST to the sound system amplifier, where they undergo final amplification.
The audio is then output by the following speakers via direct lines:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker

AM tuner function sequence (MW/LW/SW)
For the MW, LW and SW radio frequency bands, the useful signals are broadcast using amplitude modulation (AM). The AM tuner integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit demodulates these signals. In other words, it separates the useful signals (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible).
FM tuner function sequence with phase diversity (FM/WB/ TMC)
For the FM radio frequency band, the useful signals are broadcast using frequency modulation (FM). The FM tuner integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit demodulates these signals. In other words, it also separates the useful signals (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible). The COMAND operating, display and controller unit also switches between the antenna amplifiers, depending on the reception quality.
Function requirements for "Radio Broadcast Data System" (with code (ZU8) USA version) or radio data system (without code (ZU8) USA version)
- A corresponding station is tuned
- The "Radio Broadcast Data System" or "RDS" function is activated

In addition to the normal radio program, many radio stations (ultra short wave) broadcast additional digital information such as station name, program type (PTY) (e.g. pop, culture) and traffic program identification (without code (ZU8) USA version). This information is evaluated by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and appears on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
Disk function sequence
The disc function sequence comprises the following subfunctions:
- DVD, CD or MP3 function sequence
- AUX function sequence
DVD, CD or MP3 function sequence
Integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is a 6-disk DVD changer with a single slot. The audio CDs or DVDs (including in MP3 format) are read in via the 6-disk DVD changer and processed internally by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The user interface for controlling the disk functions (e.g. track selection) and for displaying supplemental information (e.g. track) is provided on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

If a memory card (Secure Digital (SD) card) is inserted into the SD slot of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the "Memory card" menu item is called up, the base screen is displayed.

- Artist, track name or group, if stored

Files (in MP3 format) from the DVD or CD via the 6-disk DVD changer of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit as well as from the memory card (SD card) via the SD slot of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit can be stored on the integrated hard disk of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and then called up as desired. If the "Music Register" menu item is called up the basic screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Artist
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Number of tracks in directory of hard disk
